plywood covering.. exactly. Not as if this would ever be the very first solar setup in typhoon/hurricane area. At least they are flat.. Many skylights, roof windows. and light tunnels have domed tops to afford some strength in them..and then there are the plastics. Some better than glass..some not as strong as well..
Solar water heater I've been going back and forth about buying a solar water heater or making one. The draw on buying one is that they look pretty good, the downside is that we have so many nieces and nephews running around and with their love of throwing rocks I worry about things getting busted. With all things considered I think I will build one. A hot shower to the wife is barely lukewarm to me, so capacity is not too much as I will be the only one taking a "hot" shower. I have a 10 gallon camp shower I bought before and it gets way too hot to use during the day, so I see the promise of solar water heating. I have the idea in my head and a bunch of extra 3/4" pipe so I will see if I can't make something that will work and look decent as well. Shawn

Tom...Mother Earth News is a fantastic resource, been a subscriber for years. They also had a solar food dehydrator a while back that I really would like to build later. Tons of good info on the net on solar water heaters so I think I have a pretty decent idea on how to build it. Shawn
Brian, Had a LPG flash heater installed a few years ago when I was still in Korea. I had a kerosene boiler which was fine in the winter as it was heating water for the in floor heating, but during summer it used way too much fuel to get hot water to the sinks and shower. The flash heater worked fantastic and a tank lasted me a couple months. If I remember correctly it was a bit more than $500 at the time. My plan was always to go solar so that is what was roughed in. I just want to make sure it looks pretty good and I think it will. Plus that plumber had the wife order quite a bit of extra 3/4" unitec pipe that I just don't want to go to waste (it is a bit pricey). Shawn
Ditto Shawn, they have an archive DVD that covers the past 40 years. I was going to order it for my daughter, they own a farm/ranch in Utah.....I have to laugh because she was always such a Diva and now has gone back to the earth for sustance. I haven't ordered yet because I guess you can only playback on pc and not just any DVD player. I will sort it out....hopefully I can burn a copy for myself. :D

When Tony was last in town he was telling me about an ice chest aircon, sounded interesting but soon forgot about it with other little things going on. Today I put one together in about 10 minutes, our 8 yr old son was "helping" me. Put in a half frozen 2 liter bottle of juice and you could almost immediately feel cool air. Replaced that with 15 pieces of the ice you get in the plastic and it is some cool air coming out. I went with a small exhaust fan (more on that shortly) for 840 peso; switch, male plug and 10' of wire for about 150 peso, the PVC I had left over and the ice chest was 300 peso. So it cost around 1,300. I went with the smallest exhaust fan I could find hoping it would be quiet, it is but the airflow is just not enough unless you are right next to it. I will swap it out with a larger one to increase the air flow tomorrow and see how it does. It would be much cheaper to just use a small fan than an exhaust fan but I think the exhaust looks better. I just figured I'd share and will update once I get a bigger fan in tomorrow as well has how it does and how long the ice lasts. Shawn
