I agree, Dr. Cho is much more reasonable and humane than Dr. Garupa.Having used both, I would never return to Dr. Garupa; however, some oral surgery that my gf needed was beyond the capability of Dr. Cho but she had no issue with recommending Dr. Ong, who is at the end of the street where Dr. Cho is located. I highly recommend Dr. Ong---gf had root canal, extractions and crown. I had root canal and crown---both at about 1/2 to 2/3's of Garupas quote. Braces are an even greater disparity in cost among Ong, Cho and Garupa---with Garupa being dramatically higher. The fact that Garupa "locks you in" after arriving is a real turn off for me as a safety issue.

I just found out I need two crowns. I went to my dentist in the US but the price made me cringe, even with my insurance paying half. I just had 4 cavities filled today and it cost me 1K USD (with an additional 250 USD for cleaning/checkup/x-rays). The crowns alone were priced around 3k USD (not including putting them in...which I'm assuming is going to be another grand or so). Would I save money by having this done in the Philippines and would the savings even be worth the risk?

For me Yes but you would need to research a Good Dentist ( we read so many different stories) but from the Cost Angle it has got to be good news. My Last set of Dentures were more than 70% cheaper here than in the UK or Spain and after 5 years are still going Strong, canvasing for new recently I am still looking at 50 to 60% Cheaper. BTW we use the dentist in Portal West, Cant Remember the name. But we have found them very good all round. Even our daughter will go there and that is saying Something.

Wrye, I would have no reservations with having Dr. Ong do the work you described. While his "bedside manner" may be lacking, I am going to him for professional services, not a "new best friend". The experiences both my gf and I have had were very positive.

Sorry you have the need to see a dentist professionally---never plesant, but even more painful when they bill like neurosurgeons!

My partner had a really good experience with a dentist opposite dewfoam factory in town, cosmetic full colour match fillings, both sides of the tooth...400p each , very good colour matching, partial lower high grade plastic denture ..............3400p the clinics name is Happy tooth and the lady dentist had a lovely nature and the surgery very clean and modern, but we had a problem of being accused of giveing payment of fake 1000p notes as you will read in our post called..our dental experience, but the denture is going well and no problems after extractions and filling

I recommend going to premier. I had a chipped tooth she fixed, my wife had highly decayed tooth she was able to repair without root canal. Once you walk in the office you could easily be in any dentist office in the west, up to date modern equipment. Digital camera and x-rays she shows you on the screen and explains what she sees. Speaks good English, her husband is Canadian.

I used Dr. Ong for my pre-deployment dental exam about 4 months ago. He wouldn't sign off on a 1 year deployment until I had a 4 cavities filled (understandable). Up to that point I had only had dental work in the US...and I was a bit surprised at the procedure at his office; I sat down, waited about 5 minutes, he came and sat down and picked up the drill.....no anesthetic injection. :o o: Talk about an adrenaline rush! I was bracing myself for intense pain and thinking, "When this is over I'm going to find every user on this forum that ever recommended this dentist and hunt them down."

Then the drill hit my tooth and it didn't feel any different from all the cavities I have had filled in the US with anesthetic....then I was thinking, "I'm going to find every dentist that has overcharged me for unnecessary anesthetic in the US and hunt them down."

Joking aside: The reason for no anesthetic could have been because they weren't very deep/large and there was little to no risk of hitting a nerve. It did scare the sh*t out of me though. Dr. Ong did a good job on the cavities and, once he sat down, finished all 4 of them in about 20-30 minutes. The first visit for me was extremely nerve racking as I was anticipating nothing but severe pain the entire time, which never came. I doubt the doctor has ever been accused of being "too chatty" his entire life. Out of the two visits, the initial checkup and the actually filling, I think he said 3 sentences to me. Absolutely no problem with that for me, I was looking for a dentist not a life coach. (I always thought it was kind of a dick move when dentists tried talking to me when their hands were in my mouth or my mouth had that wedge thing in it. Always thought they did that just for a laugh, there is no way they can actually understand anything other than a "yes", "no" or "OWW!".)

Check-up and 4 cavities cost me around 1.5-2k if I remember correctly.

    Side note:
I never got those crowns in the Philippines. I told Dr. Ong what my previous dentist said and asked if a crown was needed. The reply was a simple, "No." (This was one of the three sentences spoken to me.)

I tried. I waited until my tooth was hurting so much that I am living on Ibuprofen and finally went to Premier.

2 weeks advance appointment was the earliest I could get. So I tried another place. Once again, these filipino dentists seem to detest giving pain killer. Even though I am there because the pain is driving me nuts he insisted on working on it without giving any local anesthetic or pain killing needles. He wants to know how bad it hurts when he sticks his little picker in the hole and touches the nerve. DUH!!!! Just give me a d*mn needle and fix it, but I seem to find all the sadistic dentists in town.

Oh well, I have an appointment with Premier in a couple weeks now so will get a second opinion then. Do they give you pain killing needles there?
