The first "female Viagra" drug touted as boosting women's sexual desire could be approved today, assuming the Food and Drug Administration decides it's safe and effective.

But the odds don't look good, as the FDA has already rejected the drug, called flibanserin, twice.

Although some organizations say that sexism is playing a role in the drug's lack of approval, experts say safety is the main criterion underlying the agency's rejections so far.

And even if flibanserin does get approved, it's unlikely to work the same magic on a couple's sex life as Viagra, said two experts, Dr. Mary Jane Minkin, a clinical professor of obstetrics and gynecology at Yale University School of Medicine in New Haven, Connecticut, and Dr. Elizabeth Kavaler, a urologist at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York City.

That's because flibanserin targets sexual desire, a much more complicated issue than the mechanics of performance, both Minkin and Kavaler said.

Why There's (Still) No Viagra for Women

Interesting. The feminist groups are out of line with their argument IMO. I bet they would have a field day with lawsuits on the drug companies if the drug was prematurely approved and was found to be dangerous later on. I guess "damned if you do, damned if you don't" applies here.

I don't know if it's possible to create a sex drive enhancer for females, because it would have to work quite differently than an ED like drug. For sure, two different kinds of issues related to sex/sex organs.

Sometimes I think medicine must think that women don't have a sex drive or it's not enough. But most of the time, it's medicine that doesn't understand the interdependence between drive and physiology of sex organs, something which is what two humans need to discover and learn how to be in tune with one another.

Seems like that's half the battle solved. No pill can "cure" or replace what two people can discover between themselves.

I was reading the other day about how little is really scientifically/medically known about the female anatomy and physiology of the clitoris. And now we are getting drug manufacturers making pills for female sex drive when this part of the human body is not fully understood?

Makes me laugh sometimes when we put the cart ahead of the horse.

    HAHAHA

Sometimes I think if men and women knew their own bodies and their own mate's bodies better, there may not be so many, "I've got a headache", and the, "I'm beat from work today" reasons.

Then again, we might get the Mother of all population explosions.

There are chemicals out there that can make people "love". MDMA (methylenedioxy-methamphetamine) is a psychoactive drug that is euphoric and empathogitic. It is usually taken in abusive doses in club settings but the drug was originally designed for psychotherapeutic purposes. Due to it's heavy misuse and being thrown on the illegal substance list it has become taboo for most researchers.

I agree if we are talking about people without medical/psychological issues. However, there are people who cannot normally experience these feelings due to medical conditions or past trauma. If a man has erectile dysfunction there is nothing a woman can do to change his ability to have sex. The same goes for women who have certain conditions.

    MDMA Short term-psychoactive effects:
    • Euphoria – a sense of general well-being and happiness
    • Increased sociability and feelings of communication being easy or simple
    • Entactogenic effects – increased empathy or feelings of closeness with others
    • A sense of inner peace
    • Mild hallucination (e.g., colors and sounds are enhanced and mild closed-eye visuals)
    • Enhanced sensation, perception, or sexuality
If research could be done to find the mechanism that triggers the "sexuality" part of this drug it could help women who are incapable such feelings.

But in the original article I posted thought it mentioned that the drug waiting for approval is psychological in nature and not physical so maybe they have found that trigger.

Yes. I totally get this piece. There are meds out there and in the pipeline to correct some of these problems to those who are desiring of wanting this improvement in their own lives.

On the other side of this coin are the asexual humans.

I wonder if the "Asexual" movement in the USA is to bring awareness to the other 99% of the population who are not asexual, that this is just another natural way of being human, too. And that in many cases, identifying as an asexual is in no way to be construed as being "broken", or unnatural. It is just another point along this long continuum of how human sexuality is defined as "within normal limits".

Boy! We human beings are such complicated living creatures.

So if pills can work for some who need them and want them, great! It could be just the "tune-up" their engine needs.

All I'm saying is that not every comes with a V-8. Some come with a V-4 or V-6 or whatever. And their RPM gauge may red line at a different rate than mine, and even though they are at full speed, it may be different than mine. They may not be broken, just different.

That's why it's important to take the time to understand and know yourself - and your mate.

Sometimes it is what it is - no harm, no foul. Just gotta love them like always and for all they mean to you, downshift the gears, and enjoy the ride.
