Washington, United States - The US State Department criticized the fact that in the Philipines an overloaded criminal justice system, a small persecution, widespread corruption and abuse of power in official posts, as well as extra-judicial killings by vigilante groups and security forces, are the most important human rights violations in the Philippines
In its report on Human Rights Practices 2014, the US State Department says that the Philippine government pursues only a few reports of human rights violations and pursuing. Also criticized is the terrorist organizations such as the Abu Sayyaf Group (ASG), the elements associated with the separatist Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) are linked Jemaah Islamiya (JI) and the New People's Army (NPA), as well, including the breakaway Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters (BIFF), just kill local government officials, security forces and civilians, the US State Department. According to the report, the Philippines has not adequately staffed personal, inefficient processes and long procedural delays in its justice system, which leads to widespread skepticism about due process and justice simultaneously. The US State Department states in its report an example, in which a court two people who killed a foreigner and deed that would normally receive a 12 to 20-year prison sentences, instead were only sentenced to probation. Going forward, the opinion of the US State Dept. won't mean jack-squat to the RP if the US won't do jack-squat about the China land-grab just west of Palawan. What good is there to having a defense treaty if the US takes no real action?

What exactly is the US supposed to do? China hasn't declared war on the Philippines, it's a territorial dispute, not an act of war. And what real claim does the Philippines have on the Spratley Islands? Proximity? Other countries have far more reasonable and long standing claims on the islands IMO.

Land grabbing has always been a reason to go to war. What would you do if say, they built military bases just off the coast of California?

The Spratley Islands is not part of the Philippines though.

Let's not forget that they kicked the US military out of their country by refusing to renew the leases on the bases. If they hadn't done that then it would be very unlikely the Chinese would be doing what they are now. The Philippine nationalism, Filipino "pride" and anti-foreign mentality is what put them in this predicament in the first place..The Philippines has neglected their own military and kicked out the US military leaving themselves completely vulnerable and then cries for US protection when China starts moving in. Trying to have their cake and eat it too.

Probably....but I bet ya that the Philippines would be nowhere to be found regardless the mutual defense treaty. It's a "take" only arrangement for the Philippines, they have nothing to give.

Yep, you make some valid points. Still, the US has been the international waterways beat cop since WWII. If it didn't take on that role, the world would be a much nastier place by now. And yes, it's partly the RP's fault that they are vulnerable, and partly our doing for being an 'enabler' by virtue of being big daddy. We are also like that to other countries - it's just a means to an end = beat cop. And it's necessary.

The US needs to act. If it doesn't, the world will choose another beat cop.

The Philippines has to let the US Military back in if they want the protection. They have to take the bad with the good. The US has been stepping up its presence in the area but they need a staging area for its navy. The Philippines is in a good spot to be that stepping stone. I also think that the Philippine should be leasing those bases completely free to the US since they are totally reliant on the US to protect their sovereignty. The US needs to start demanding more from these countries that are incapable of defending themselves (and they are mainly incapable because of massive corruption within their government...hence the State Department telling them they need to clean up their act).

Yep. Agree. We protect them and shoulder the expense of our military. At the very least the RP should provide free base real estate rental. It would show that the RP is a defense partner in earnest.
