:meh: Anothhet Head Scratcher about Equality of the Sexes, which we know just is not going to happen here,
personally I have never heard of this one But... we have all been here long enough (and newbies will learn quickly) that the Administration and certainly the BI work in very strange and mysterious ways.

Pinoys’ foreign wives get to be Filipinos, too | Goldstar Daily News

It has been addressed as discriminatory at the Foot of the Article but those few words to me says it all.
If it was not so funny I would think They only want us (Men) for our Money and now they want our Women.
Well anyone wanting most of our ExWives has got to be desperate, so maybe the citizenship is a carrot.

    In the article is said;
any woman who is now or may hereafter be married to a citizen of the Philippines and who might herself be lawfully naturalized shall be deemed a citizen of the Philippines.

I wonder how the BI will handle that id women from China or anyplace decide they want to be a Fillipina?
What if the marriage never happens?
Sometimes it appear that a lot of laws do not get much thought! Of course how much thinking can you expect from an actor, boxer or game show host?

That's one reason (and a very bad one at that, as stated)....another reason is that the vast majority of people who visit the Philippines are men and the government knows that including men with this law would give a voice to a whole lot of foreigners....and they can't have that (all one would have to do to avoid the BoI shakedown is get married). It is also so uncommon for a western woman to marry a Filipino that I would bet the number of western women who have taken advantage of this law is somewhere in the hundreds (probably a bit more for women of neighboring countries). It's nothing more than a fluff law that some politician could put under their belt.

    Yeah pretty interesting alright.
At least they (Filipinos) acknowledge the discrimination but of course they can care less.
Im not sure why myself...certainly an effort as stated in the article, for family unity. The Philippine governement obviously wants to keep Filipino men capable of taking and supporting a foreign wife on home soil.
I mentioned before reading a post on this board a long time ago from Pangit Pilot, whoever he or she is:
the job of foreigner is to bring everything he has ever accumulated here and LEAVE IT!
Im beginning to think that is absolutely true.

Seems a little contradictory in terms, they can't do that for a Pinay wife. How will they do it for a foreign wife?. NAH! they will hope that they bring cash as men do.
Boy would I like to be a Fly on the wall if a Pinoy got my Exwife and she could throw a mean left Hook toboot. :roflmao:

    And we do don't we?

    JP

BTW Pangit Pilot is or was one of our elder statesmen on DI he wrote many good Posts and Started Threads worth remembering and Quoting as you have done. Alas he has not been on line for some time.

We have to put this in proper context. Keep in mind that the cited law, CA 473, is a commonwealth act. These laws were created by the Commonwealth of the Philippines administration from the mid thirties to the early forties.

At that time, there likely weren't many foreign visitors loading up on Filipino wives.

My interpretation is that these laws were meant to be protective of the woman in the relationship. This likely assumed the man was the bread-winner of the household and women needed full rights to survive in case the husband pulled a runner. This also jives with handling of child custody, which seems to lean towards awarding that right to the woman.

Carrying this same assumption with a foreign man marrying a Filipino woman, the man (the breadwinner) doesn't need the same protections.

These days, the women are often the breadwinners, so this law seems outdated.

Yep. These laws seem to be outdated.

However, because I am a foreign woman (US) - and single - and one who is willing to settle in the RP for three years, IF I met the "man of my dreams" and he happened to be a Philippine citizen AND marriage was an option on the table, then I would be seriously looking at this as a way to secure my financial future and options in the RP. Who wouldn't? Seems this is a win-win for that couple, and for the nation as well.

I'm trying to figure out what would be the downside to this for me - a single woman with a good income who is coming to the RP for an education? If I were to find a good man who happened to be a RP citizen AND is the "man of my dreams", what's the problem?

Thanks for your posting on this. I appreciate your thoughtful replies to this issue. It is highly doubtful I would find this "man of my dreams" here in the RP as this is NOT what I am coming to the RP to do. But one never knows what the future may bring, so I am just wanting to know what my options would be IF this scenario would present itself....

Again, thank-you for your thoughtful responses!

    V/R,
    nwlivewire
