AT LEAST 36 people were killed after a passenger ferry with 173 on board capsized in rough waters off Ormoc City in Leyte past noon on Thursday, just a few minutes after leaving the port there, a disaster monitoring official said.

Rescue boats picked up dozens of survivors who clung to the overturned hull of the Kim Nirvana, one kilometer (about half a mile) from Ormoc port, Ciriaco Tolibao from the city’s disaster risk reduction and management office told AFP.

Divers were scouring the murky waters searching for survivors from the inside of the ship, he said.

Seems like this ferry was overloaded, kids were not counted onto the boat and was well loaded with building supplies also!
Let's hope a few go to jail over this.

As we know, Greed will be at the bottom of this, Pack em in fellers! Pump Boats and Barcas were never meant for this type of Journey.
Oh! this is not the First and most certainly won't be the last But wait! Didn't the Coast Guard in a Recent Article go to great pains to say all these types of Transport will be checked for Overloading before leaving Port or was that in another dream I had.

Yes I agree with Davy Heads should roll but.........................:nailbiting:

MB Nirvana rescue operations . Passengers of the capsized MBCA Kim-NIrvana ferry (far left) are rescued by a Philippine coast guard tug boat off Ormoc City, July 2. The ferry carrying 189 passengers and crew capsized in heavy waves on Thursday, killing at least 36 people, the coast guard and police said. The Philippine Coast Guard has ordered the captain of the M/B Kim Nirvana-B, the motorized banca that capsized off Ormoc City on Thursday, to take a drug test.

The coast guard will also check the boat captain's professional records checked as it and the Maritime Industry Authority (MARINA), which regulates shipping, launch twin investigations into the incident where 48 people have been confirmed dead.

The captain is already in police custody.

Cdr. Armand Balilo, PCG spokesman, said its Maritime Casualty Investigation Team is already in Ormoc to check on whether the M/B Kim Nirvana-B made a faulty maneuver, was unstable, was overloaded, or was affected by bad weather.

Balilo said a check with PAGASA showed that the weather was fine when the boat capsized.

The coast guard has also ruled out overloading since the manifest only lists 173 passengers

I'm sure some people here live on a different planet than most of us, a bloody drug test ha, take a look at the cargo it had onboard and also the kids which were not inc in the passenger list. I wonder who bribed the coastguard to say this.

When I worked at a shipyard if you had an accident (or screwed something up that cost a lot of money) you better bet your @ss the insurance company was going to have you take a drug test. I don't think it is something outrageous to ask for.

Bet they don't find the cash tin to check but on a serious note, I wonder if they will check the weight of the cargo carried. AGAIN Lets shut the stable door After the horses has bolted Something is not adding up kids unaccounted for, Cargo on a supposed Passenger carrier.
We have to ask Was this tragedy Preventable Yes? (Then why did it happen) No? lots of heads should Roll. Coast Guards can lay the Blame but won't take any of course. Another Professional Agency talking Spanish BLAH, BLAH, BLAH. NARDA

There is a chance they weren't to blame.
Is the coast guard responsible for checking if cargo is fastened down properly?

When an Agency say we will check and Don't. Yes I would Hold them Responsible

The Coast Guards went to great lengths to tell all WE will ensure these boats are safe to sail, in an Article some time ago. in this they failed. Failed. Nuff said Argue all you want, Safety just is not in Anyone's remit here. Is it?
