When you write the words "inside job", what does that mean? Can you give me an example of what an inside job looks like in the Philippines? I mean who are the most likely to be these inside job candidates?

This news article saddens me to read this. Sounds like this guy and his spouse were nice folks, giving to their community and such.

    Sad. Very sad.

I'm beginning to wonder if it's really worth coming to the RP.

Ex-pats get in the news for sex issues with minors, the locals resent foreigners, drunk ex-pats making public scenes in crowded bars, and those ex-pats who do live a normal good life are murdered.

    What's wrong with this picture?

The wife or her family are usually the first and most likely suspects.
We don't know that he was living a normal good life, there could be more to the story (and there very likely is). You don't get murdered in the Philippines for shits and giggles.

That’s a difficult statement to deal with. Is it worth it coming here? I’m certain that in this area you’d find many, possibly the majority of expats who’d say absolutely yes, it is worth it, at least for them – certainly not for everyone. There are many of us who live peaceful lives here, usually with a girlfriend or wife, who’ve never been spit upon, shot at, harassed by the authorities… Many of us find life here quite livable and affordable. You won’t read about us in the press. Many don’t post on this or other forums. If you’ve never been to the Philippines or you’ve been here but haven’t spent much time, my advice would be come here, see for yourself, but don’t burn bridges at home until you’ve been here for some length of time. Don’t get overly committed, don’t buy anything – just check it out. Good common sense should keep you safe and out of trouble.

Great post! Absolutely agree that the Philippines is worth the trip and, with a bit of common sense, you will most likely have no problems at all.

Yes Nwlivewire i can give you an exsample, i had a very good friend in Bayawan a few years back it was at the time of the worlds money problems he told me he was going to stop supporting many of his wifes family as his German pension was not enough to go around. Not long after is wife went to Manila for the weekend , he was found stabbed to death in his own bed while she was away. I was told by the police(you gussed it) it was an inside job, i never heard or seen any news on that again .

Thanks for the good reading on this thread.

It's always a good thing to have a realistic picture of what the lay of the land is when coming to a foreign country as they are all so unique in what they offer - both on the up and down sides.

I think I will come and get my Card, then travel around a bit before settling down for awhile in Duma. Or, I may get a place in Duma and then travel a bit before I start school. Either way, I think I will travel and settle in for a few months prior to beginning my classroom studies. This makes more sense to me than getting my card and jumping right into school and not getting any breathing room. I'm in no BIG hurry, though I do need to stay on track with my timeline , + or - six months.

I'm a pretty quiet person and not one to throw caution to the wind as I sometimes did when I was younger.

But I have to tell you fellas, when I read these stories about these "Black Widow" wives - or is it their family members? - WOW! It's a hard thing to wrap my head around.

Thank-you again one and all! It pays to know the road and the load.

    V/R,
    nwlivewire

I think there are two schools of thought here.
    1. Fate. When your number is up, adios.
    2. Don't test or assist Fate.

I'm enjoying this thread and wish I had something worthwhile to add. But maybe I'm lucky I don't.
I do like hearing as many of the horror stories as are available though. Armed with info somehow at least makes me aware of the possibilities.
I've been here two years now and plan on staying, nomatter what is going on. I will just try not to p*ss anybody off and stay informed.
Was this thread created as a result of the recent Paliwan murder of the 69 yr old Brit?

You need to always remember Pinoy males have an ego about as big as it can get and is especially bad when combined with drugs or alcohol. The slightest provocation can turn into a big problem and it is very wise to try and defuse it or walk away. A punch in the mouth to them or causing them to lose face will probably turn into a return with 6 or 7 of their relatives/ brothers or other scum bags with guns or knives.. If they kill or hurt a foreigner the police will do nothing except tell them not to do it again.. Sad but that is a fact here..
