Last year my bank switched from Visa to Discover and I've had nothing but problems since. The two shops on base here simply do not accept Discover. I'm concerned that when I get to the Philippines that I will face the same problem.

So....has anyone had any luck with using a Discover card in the Philippines? Their website says this:
I'm looking for some real life experience here....not what some business (especially a credit card company) tells me should happen. I am really only concerned with ATMs (since basically no business I deal with accepts any type of card....and those that do simply cannot understand that a debit card can be used as a credit card and refuse to run my card because it doesn't say "credit" on it.....even though it can be ran as credit :shifty:).

So, do the majority of ATMs accept Discover in the Philippines/Dumaguete? What about the "new" cards with the chip and pin? I think you Europeans (and the rest of the world, because....'Muricah has to be different) have been lucky enough to have this for several years now....my bank in the US will be converting over to that type of card in 2016. I have spoke to my bank (a small local bank) about this and they are willing to give me a temporary Visa debit/credit card until the new chip and pin cards come out....which they say will resolve any acceptance problems.

I had a problem with my Visa Electron card & my Solo Electrons, it seems to me that only Visa & M/C are accepted. they don't accept Electron Cards in L/P maybe that is what your card is.
Azon had a few Problems with a Prepaid M/C a couple of years ago. This was an electron Re - loadable card. I have never heard of the card you talk about but in the main I just don't think the PI like Foreign cards, Unless they are Visa or M/C. My PNP ATM cash card can be used as a debit card but only in the PI ( at Bank Net outlets) and we have never had a problem yet.
My Visa Debit card has been Chip and Pin for over 8 years now and no problem but PNB cards are all chip and Pin so I honestly don't see any problem unless as you say your card is not chip and Pin.
Check if it is one of the Electron type.

    JP:wink:

I think it is the other way around. Foreign banks/credit card companies don't like their cards being used in the Philippines because of the widespread fraud that occurs in the country.

8 years?! lol US banks need to get off their @ss and get this thing implemented. I still have a wallet full of the old magnetic strip cards. The only thing I have that is chip and pin is the pre-paid card the US military issues out that is connected to a bank account (Eagle Cash Card).

    Strongly agree.
I live and work in California, do business with an SF credit union and my wallet has magnetic strip cards only...

Never had a problem here with UK issued Visa / Mastercard (chip and pin) - very few places take Amex.

Just give the card to your girlfriend and tell her to go shopping. Then kick back and record all the answers (charges) rolling in.
