Not sure it fell behind it just didn't progress, Marcos should take some of the Blame but in Reality he did some good stuff, mainly for himself of Course.
Dictators of his elk as with Franco of Spain, and I do believe he modeled himself on Him, left some Good Ideas and Ground work/ Legacies to work on but these people were in the main Secretive and told no one how or what to do next So it went on. It Took Spain d*mn near 15 Years to get out of the Franco ideology
and get back on Track so I don't know. Maybe, Like Spain and some South American Countries, it will take a Disaster to turn the electorates heads in the right Direction.

Geez, listen to you people. I feel like I just stepped into McDonald's. And I can't even get a cheeseburger!

The Philippines is fine. They'll figure it out on their own time. On Filipino time. Get off their backs.

I'm not sure the commentators have recently looked at a map: Comparing the PH to Singapore (city state), South Korea or Vietnam is like comparing apples with oranges. It's an island nation, which results in infrastructural problems that require immense amounts of money to solve. Money that is simply not readily available (not even when all the fat cats were stripped of their ill-gotten wealth). Has anyone given any thought to what quantities of building materials are required to build the new dwellings for the Yolanda victims in the Tacloban area, even when these dwellings are as basic as possible? There are simply not enough trucks and ships available in the country to transport that sort of quantities in the time the public wants to see it done. It's a logistical nightmare and will take years to accomplish. The same scenario applies across the board: Building roads and bridges and subsequently commercial buildings to boost the economy in a country like South Korea is relatively easy: all they meet is a few rivers. In this country building a bridge or tunnel connecting Duma with the island of Cebu would be a complete nightmare, also because of the threat of eartquakes. I fully agree with The Dude's comment: "The Philippines is fine. They'll figure it out on their own time. On Filipino time. Get off their backs."

Considering how Old the RP is, they have had plenty of Time already But as you say get off their back? What and continue to let our wives G/F moan as they do about how the rest of the world live in relation to their own Country. They are among the first to moan about most things especially about corruption YET they are the very ones that can start the change. Hans my friend, I take your point but the UK is also an Island, I don't think this is too valid an Argument.

One island, dear Jack, ONE!! Building the Channel was already an engineering feat in itself: imagine that at about 5 - 10 times the depth of the Channel and a wee bit longer.... Oh yes, there are no trains here, so a tunnel should be suitable for motor vehicles... Hmmmmm. Oh, before I forget: here they have to connect a few more islands with one another and not just the one between England and France....

All things will come if it is wanted and That is the key Question.
Infrastructure like this is not their problem. People are their Problem and only some people not the masses.
Get an Honest and hard working Government and all rest will follow.
Where would the West be if we all thought like zombies, frightened of our own shadows.
Bridges that need to be built are between the people and those with the means & know how to succeed. Not Roads.

There are many differences between the Philippines and any other country I have ever been to. The Philippines has geography which brings national infrastructure challenges that many other nations do not face. They also have communication issues due to the number different dialects / languages used.

Singapore used to be the cleanest city I had ever seen. My first trip there was in the mid 1980's and I am sure that has not changed. I do know if they had the same language issues that the Philippines has faced, however they do have a large number of immigrants which may or may not cause issues.

In any event Singapore has accomplished much in the last fifty years. I guess now we have to wait to see what the Philippines will do.

Biggest difference is that Singapore is a Chinese state. In Phils only the small elite is Chinese who have no interest other than keep the masses poor and uneducated with the good help of religion.

Singapore is also a Confucian state. Master Kong's teachings promote the importance of education, work moral and discipline. This has made SingaPura one of the richest countries.

China and Singapore always had good relations and Mao and Lee good friends. Understanding was easy 'cause Mao greatly respected master Kong's teaching. Officially ofcourse not

I agree with everyones input, if we were only Filipino we could all run for office and make a new government, enforce laws and build a wonderful utopia. How about changing the name to Pingapore? I hope somebody can figure it out eventually.
