Many shoppers in England will have to pay 5p for plastic carrier bags from Monday in a bid to slash the 7.6 billion handed out every year.

England is the last part of the UK to start charging for bags.

Shoppers at all supermarkets and large shops will be required to use their own bags or be charged for plastic bags.

Environmentalists have welcomed the move, but have called for a more comprehensive scheme that includes all retailers and all types of bags.

Retailers with 250 or more employees must charge at least 5p for the bags they provide for shopping in stores and for deliveries, but smaller shops and paper bags are exempt.

Free bags will still be provided for consumers buying uncooked meat, poultry or fish; prescription medicine; certain fresh produce such as flowers or potatoes; and unwrapped ready-to-eat food such as chips.

If this were to be made law here plastic bags would disappear overnight, and all funds could be used for environmental issues minus the cost of the bag if any were sold.
Why do the sari stores insist in putting a pack of cigarettes in a plastic bag amongst other small items! They are the worst offenders here.

In parts of Manila plastic bags are totally banned. I know there are more places but my experience is from Antipolo in the hills north west of Manila. Shops have adapted by simply providing paper bags which for some items like fresh meats is inconvenient but generally a great idea. It hasn't made the place any cleaner just less plastic bags in the litter.

They tried banning plastic bags here in Valencia and Dumaguete but, naturally, they couldn't keep the paper bags in stock.

The fresh meat can be wrapped up in "poly slap" and then placed in a paper bag, and then we wont
have to breathe the cancerous smoke from burning plastic.

MANILA, Philippines – The Philippines has among the highest trash collection rates in Southeast Asia yet it's the world's 3rd biggest source of plastic leaking into the ocean.

A new report on plastic pollution by international group Ocean Conservancy and McKinsey Center for Business and Environment looks into this alarming discrepancy.

The study, released to media on October 1, looked at 5 of the world’s biggest contributors of plastic pollution in the world’s oceans
Why PH is world’s 3rd biggest dumper of plastics in the ocean

Hmm, interesting read but it lacks the identification of the one and only reason for the pollution as described: Mentality!! Before anyone starts pointing fingers at crooked politicians and money-grabbing CEO's of garbage collection companies: This mentality issue is not limited to the countries identified as the major polluters - I have witnessed the decline in taking responsibility for your own environment in my own country (the industrialised, well organised and educated Western Europe) over the years. In the 'old' days, my home country was known for its cleanliness - people would sweep and scrub the sidewalk in front of their house very regularly, but nowadays even turning around to drop an empty plastic coke bottle in the garbage bin next to you is too much to ask. Just drop it where you stand, why make an @ss of yourself in front of your peers, right? I'm afraid I'm going to point fingers, though! It has ALL to do with the way kids are brought up, so I am pointing fingers at parents, schools and other professionals responsible for the education of youngsters. If a person is not thought from an early age on, it will take an enormous effort to change habits mid-term and we are faced with the consequences of this incompetent education very regularly. Granted, it's easy for me to say this as we don't have any offspring ourselves (at least not that I know of), so I have not been faced with the task of raising youngsters and educating them. However, I remember very well how my parents brought me up and I still look around to find a garbage bin if I want to dispose of a piece of paper or empty bottle. If there's nothing around I keep the trash with me until I can properly dispose of it, not drop it and walk on. Now to the plastic bags here: I'm glad we still get them! We use the old bags daily to collect our garbage and when it's full, place it in the collection bin for the property owner to dispose of (How and where he/she does that I am not familiar with). We do not have a garbage collection system here, so without the plastic bags we would have a ton of rubbish with hundreds of rats, cats and other vermin in the vicinity. So, until a proper and regular garbage collection system is available, we will need those darned plastic bags. But, we do not just throw empty plastic bags, bottles, paper or other trash on the side of the road, like other seem to do/prefer. Just my two-cents worth guys....

I'm an old boy now , I started work in 1963 in South London as a fishmonger . We wrapped in grease proof paper and newspaper. All shoppers supplied there own trolleys ( wicker baskets on wheels ) or shopping bags . We supplied paper carrier bags ( advertising Broadway Fisheries printed on the sides ) at 1p each .
Then came the supermarkets, they're the ones started the whole sorry episodes of plastic packing and free carrier bags.
They and they alone are responsible for the present situation , now they have the brass balls to charge for plastic bags , weak government policy allows this irony to proceed .

Hans,we do have a garbage collection here, they come Friday am around 10am unless holiday or its raining. If you drop by the municiple and tell them where you are they will collect your garbage.
We give them something as an incentive to come every week as there is always a lot and the drum is always full, the guys always separate the glass and plastics to make a few peso on the side.

Junob Has a collection Every Saturday from your Gate or a Designated Area if not on the Baringay Road. We Purchase from either the Driver or one of the Tanods a Book of 10 Self adhesive green coloured Strips that are put on the Bag, 10 peso per Large 50 kg size or 2 at Concrete size bags.

nb. Junob has the Distinction of being Top Performer ( Well 2014 anyway) on Waste Disposal in Dumaguete and earns a Good Revenue for Selling that waste to the Company that uses it to make the Fuel Bricks for Furnaces. Of course it is still a fairly waste Ridden Area but much is done to Remove the bulk. I am sure that if Others Baringays were to realize that "Where there is Muck, [Trash] there is Money, to be made" we might all see a Different Story.
