Before I bow out of this one I will just say that I see no point in Universities or any other Body Doing Research on things if they will not at least look at others researches on offering alternatives and/or Remedies for a Problem found. What ever happened to that little Word Cooperation to a common end?
I have no answers as I am Joe Public but if I did I, would surely be selling it to someone, or at least trying to

The Philippines is not the rest of the world. And its not the 1950s more like 14th century Europe - its a feudal system here pretty much. And the "rest of the world" has not found a way around these issues. { Africa , China. india, south america ] The 1st world may have [ The EU, USA, Canada, Austalia, Japan, Singapore ] but then those countries in the first world are also very very expensive to live in, infrastructure good but charged for accordingly. Japan has super fast internet but inet in japan is very expensive as are cel phone calls and texts { you pay to receive texts in Japan ] . None of the countries above have the physical problems of the Philippines { Japan the closest but as I mentioned Inet in Japan is expensive ] - this nation has a tiny land mass spread across very volcanic hilly terrain separated by masses of shallow water. Also zero free market competition in the Philippines and not much incentive for the telco corporations to give away profits when the society accepts the 10th rate service as normal.

Many of the islands already have cables ran between them. Not sure how interconnected they are or how updated this map is.

Fiber optics over land are not shown in the picture above. I found some better maps that show cables over land on other websites but they only seems to have data for the US and Europe and not much for Asia.....

To visualise the problem I made the following trace route between my PLDT line in Dumaguete and Globe line in Cebu.

Here's a new trace route done today. Apparently they changed it so they don't hop over Hong Kong anymore. But instead they route it via 4 cities in the USA. Sacramento - New York - Las Vegas - Los Angeles.
This will not only make traffic even slower with increased latency. It will also give the NSA the legal right to eaves drop your traffic, as they can on all traffic going in our out of the USA.
So, here you sit in Dumaguete and chat with your friend next door, and the most powerful intelligence agency in the world can listen to every word you type.
It's more fun in the Philippines.

Makes you wonder if there was some sort of agreement made between the Philippines and the US because of the recent kidnapping/terrorist problems in the Philippines.

MANILA, Philippines – Globe Telecom may be coming out with upgraded Platinum Broadband plans that have higher bandwidth, according to a report by Yugatech on Wednesday, October 21

The leaked document acquired by Yugatech pointed out that Globe Telecom will provide a 50Mbps (Megabits per second) unlimited connection for P2,499. There will also be a 100Mbps line for P3,499.

Globe's Tattoo Platinum Home Broadband plans currently have 50Mbps and 100Mbps plans for P4,999 and P6,999, respectively.

The report follows PLDT's launch of a 1Gbps (Gigabit per second) fixed broadband line in the country.

Globe's Platinum Home Broadband plans are available in select high-end subdivisions and condominiums in Metro Manila and Santa Rosa, Laguna.

If the announcement is accurate, Globe users should expect the change to become effective on October 24. – Rappler.com
So this looks like it's for the select areas and not us! It just shows they could give us all good band width if they really wanted!

This is a step in the right direction but as I read in the articles all this is taking place in Manila. When it will reach here is anyone's guess. I'm not holding my breath.
