As I see it different countries need different sorts of rulers/governments,eg if saddam and gadaffi were still in power the Middle East would be a safer place! Duterte would make this a safer place,if not who would we all prefer as president of the pi?

I can see your point Dave, but it to me it would only be safe where he was, I would worry about the Rest of the Country

Safer for awhile. It starts with him killing criminals....anytime a guy is murdered by his death squad people will say, "oh, they must have done something to deserve that" (and some of them probably will deserve it). After people are comfortable with all of the unsolved murders he will start to go after his political opponents and people won't blink an eye because they are used to the murders and just assume the guy deserved it. It also sends a message to the people you are leading that killing is a way to solve your problems. Yeah, there are things about Filipino culture that should change but Duterte ain't looking to change anything (if anything he is only reinforcing those cultural issues and using them as a weapon to gain power)....and do you really want to be in a country where people would rather murder their problems away than have the facts put out there in court? Yeah, I've heard he has "strict rules" for who gets murdered and who doesn't but since that is all made in secrecy behind closed doors (the opposite of how justice is supposed to work) I have absolutely no reason to believe a d*mn thing he says.

If Duterte becomes president (and lives long enough to actually do what he wants), I'm sure he will go after the oligarch's power and fortune to "give back to the Filipino people" as well. Once that power and money is gone who is he going to look to blame next? The problem certainly won't with him, the police/military or the Filipino people. It will be the problem of outside forces (who will likely have cut the Philippines off from international banking/trade....creating even larger problems for the country). He's going to turn Filipino pride (aka nationalism) and blame everyone but who is to blame. Foreigners will eventually be seen as a problem and be deported or killed.....all it will take is for one Filipino to accuse you wrongdoing and then the evidence gets taken behind closed doors where they will decide your fate.

Who would be a better president? Almost anyone.

I don't recall too many people lining up to retire or go on vacation in those countries while they were in power. Let's not act like Iraq and Libya were some utopia under their ruthless rule. Dictators rarely start their political careers without support from the people. Luckily for the Philippines Duterte is late to the game (already 70 years old)....but how much damage can he do before he finally dies? Wait, what's that? Political regimes are a real thing? Well, I guess we can look forward to Duterte Jr as well. :meh: Throw a Marcos to the mix and you have a strong dictator tag team. You will have the experienced dictator family guiding a new face that will steal from the Filipino people for a very, very long time.

IMHO what the PI needs is an benevolent Dictator like Lee Kuan Yew of Singapore was.
