 Whilst We can take it that many of us are unhappy with the Traffic Situation here in Dumaguete and maybe the Surrounding Areas but I was wondering if it is any better anywhere else, say Tanjay, Bayawan Bacalod or even over the Water on Cebu, not the larger Cities but areas like Iloilo or Oslob and Areas like this.
Places that are near enough to get to a large City (Cebu, Maduao? Mactan and Lapu Lapu itself) but could still have a traffic Problem

Just a thought about this as I am not too sure it is confined to Dumaguete alone.

Everywhere I have been in the Philippines has had bad traffic, no matter the size or number of people on the road. Driving is just something Asians suck at.

All locations around Negros have traffic problems but would consider Dumaguete to have the worse amount of problems, mainly due to the total lack of any enforcement of traffic regulations. Total inapt attitude of most users especially the trikes and motor bikes whom are willing to kill each other to advance only a few meters in front of each other.

Exactly the same attitude/driving habits coming from the taxi and jeepney drivers here in Bacolod. The only difference here is they are driving larger vehicles and blocking more roadway than trikes. Same painfully sluggish speeds as in Dumaguete (even a bit slower). The more public transportation a city has the slower the traffic. The infrastructure here simply wasn't designed to handle that type of traffic...but locals must have the public transportation because most can't afford their own vehicles.

Not sure if the asians in general suck at it or their driving capabilities are due to a complete lack of education. Someone shows them where the pedals are, the steering wheel and the horn. And then GO GO GO GO.

An asian will learn the hard way after he smashes his bike/trike a few times.
Or overtakes on a narrow stretch of road (coast road at San Jose perfect example) then realizes there is no way to go when the truck/bus coming the other way will not and can not give way for him.
Or speeds his supercharged/turbocharged big black/white SUV (King of the Road) overtaking everything/everone possible - only to realize it takes longer to slow down - and that truck won't move of the road for him (there is always someone with bigger tons than you) - or the poor bike in front does not even get a chance to see him before the car runs the bike over.
Or that the car at 100kmh handles a lot different than at 50kmh.

Education, enforced rules, enforced fines, enforced (read smarter) checkpoints, etc etc etc. And let me state again - education, education, education :thumbsup:. (Woops - sorry I am being pedantic :sneaky::sneaky::sneaky:).

And better road systems/infrastructures would go a long way to improving traffic as well, but only with enforced rules. Otherwise you are only compounding the situation.

You will still get idiot/dangerous/stupid drivers - like you do in every country.

Pray for an increase in the price of gasoline.
Five years ago gasoline was expensive. Many time you would see people with no fuel pushing their bikes to the Petron (or wherever). They only drove somewhere if it was necessary.
Now gas is cheap so people can drive anywhere, anytime.
If the prices are higher I think a lot more people will stay home.

They also suck at realizing or caring that there are other people in the world which has a distinct effect on their driving habits, walking habits, queuing habits, ATM habits, going to the cinema habits, karaoke volume habits and ................. :banghead::vomit::inpain::frown:

I don't know but I do plan to find out before I decide to settle down somewhere permanent. I like Dumaguete but it does have several disadvantages as mentioned by others...

Yes, I agree and also I liked driving in the Philippines when I first arrived here as very few people were able to afford cars or motorbikes and the only people who were driving were Jeepneys, trikes and the occasional car owned by another foreigner or the few rich locals. Boy things have changed over the last 20 years!!!
