A disease linked to the Zika virus in Latin America poses a global public health emergency requiring a united response, says the World Health Organization. Experts are worried that the virus is spreading far and fast, with devastating consequences. The infection has been linked to cases of microcephaly, in which babies are born with underdeveloped brains. The WHO alert puts Zika in the same category of concern as Ebola. It means research and aid will be fast-tracked to tackle the infection. Zika-linked condition: WHO declares global emergency - BBC News First I've heard of this virus, that's spread by mosquitoes according to the article. Let's hope it doesn't make its way to the Philippines.
Oh it will - until they come up with a vaccine - whch could take a few years. The RP has many workers all over the world, so I would think it's but a matter of time before Zika arrives to her shores. The US news media reported that Brazil has asked all its citizens to avoid having children for the next TWO YEARS. Really? A heavily Roman Catholic country (over 60% - about 128 million RCs) - millions of those capable of reproduction - and the Brazilian government is asking all citizens to avoid having children (pregnancy) for the next two years??? What's the Pope have to say about that one??? Just say "No" to sex - be celibate in your marriage??? V/R, nwlivewire
Maybe the US news really sucks at translating Portuguese. That's sounds way over the top and very unrealistic.
A horrible disease to be sure. Eventually it will probably come here. I assume it is only a matter of time as we have everything mosquitoes need to breed and prosper in this climate and with international air travel being what it is... Turns out this virus is also spread through sexual intercourse as well. Zika virus was sexually transmitted in Texas, CDC says - CNN.com
It's all over the cable news here in the States. According to the CDC, Zika-infected males can spread this, too. That's why I was wondering what the Pope has to say about this to the married RC population of Brazil - and elsewhere around the world. What a nightmare! nwlivewire
Funny as the RC is against any form of birth control. Excellent question! Like to see him squirm trying to answer that one...
Looks like it has been in the Philippines.....and probably for quite some time. It just hasn't been associated with birth defects here. (And it turns out the virus is pretty much a non-event for the vast majority of those who contract it.)
