Oh Dear Trouble at Mill, as we would say in the UK Dismissed workers slam BPO firm, SPi Global, in Dumaguete I always thought Business was Booming for these People? ( or is there another side to this?)
Sounds like business as usual in the PI. Workers are cheap and plentiful and companies don't want to pay benefits so it's contract labor for less than 6 months and rehire new batch. My kids went through this with every company they worked for until they graduated from University and went overseas. Happened at SM, Robinson's Jollibee, McDonald's, Chow King etc... the list is endless. Even my eldest an Architect was working on 6 different sites around Luzon from Iba, Zambales to Subic and Clark to the multitude of cities encompassing Metro Manila a different site every day sleeping on a Bus at night while traveling to his various work sites and at the end of 6 months they let him go because they didn't want to pay him benefits. But, he got his two years work experience and is an OFW getting good money overseas.
Its time they updated the labor laws yet again at least for major business's. Stop the BS contract 5-6 month crap abuse. But they need to still avoid sticking it to the small business's that are less then say 10 workers.
Businesses are there to make money and will do what the law allows. If Filipinos don't like their laws they should be protesting in front of government buildings instead of the businesses that are doing what they are, apparently, allowed to do. Sure, there are some businesses out there that will go above and beyond what they are required but the vast majority won't do anything but the bare minimum......and being in such a corrupt country, many will do much less than what is required. Filipinos have no one to blame but themselves. This is the government and society they have built....and therefore deserve. They shouldn't point the finger at anyone but themselves and the people they have elected. Filipino "pride" is much too strong for any of that nonsense though.
