PIA | Dgte trike drivers trained to boost tourism So ? What is the deal with "long noses" have to pay 100 pesos and locals only 8 pesos ? I never did really care about the difference but wouldn't tourists if they knew ? And how even the locals are treated horribly by these men even women and children simply trying to get around ? They refuse any fares they feel are not going in their "direction" or such and all sorts of illegal acts such as no sleep, being intoxicated or worse. Are these classes going to fix that ? All they're worried about is if these guys will vote for the incumbents.
No, because our frustrations in dealing with them isn't from a lack of training on their part, rather it's a lack of understanding on how they operate on our part. They know what they need to do to make money on the challenge of 8 pesos per seat, we don't. Training might help them be more pleasant to deal with, but it won't change the economics / logistics of making a living. I don't know in what situations you are having to pay 100 pesos. I never pay that much, even going out to places like Bacong from Dumaguete late at night. The only route I have heard of which is normal for a 100 peso fare is coming back from Valencia late at night. Locals pay less in part because they go to terminals to get to places you are paying more for on special trips.
Could be, but the mall to the subdivision behind Dumaguete Springs is NOT a special trip. I'm relaying all these bargaining things through my asawa and she's been maltreated almost daily by these low lifes and couldn't even hardly get our son back and forth from school at the time. Many times she had told me that they fall asleep constantly and seem drugged which scared the hell out of her and how countless times she's had to yell at them to stay awake. Ok that may be from being overworked but I think most of these drivers are not even owner operators and could care less about how they drive or how they treat their customers. You are of course familiar with the cultural aspect of taking anything from anybody and not raising a stink. Not everyone goes along with this and I can see it on the forum as well, very interesting. Just another reason to leave the so-called "City of Gentle People" for greener (?) pastures behind. The choking fumes of all these poorly maintained pocket rockets are way too much to make any such claim of also being the "Motorcycle Capital" laughable as well.
I wonder if there is a way to distinguish the 249 "tourism-oriented drivers" from the other 2251 regular trike drivers in Dumaguete? I think an official list of driver names along with their contact numbers would be a good idea. I think this is a good idea. Once upon a time (2005-2006ish) I took a tour of Cebu City with a cab driver that had a tourist guide certification for a couple thousand pesos and he took me around to all the spots in the city and was quite knowledgeable of the history of the city and all the locations. Where he took me in a day would have taken me weeks to do on my own. Don't get in the trikes that give you an up-front price or ask you "how much"....and you should never ask them "how much" before you get in, just tell them where you want to go. It's on you to know the actual price and how much a trip will cost, if you have to ask them at the end of the trip you had better expect them to "fudge" the numbers a bit. I have found that P15-20 covers any trike ride across down. The cab drivers in Cebu/Bacolod/Manila/Iloilo/anywhere else are just as bad and their vehicles are just as poorly maintained. You won't find any relief in this country from unethical public transportation drivers. Many will always try to get as much as the possibly can from their customers and there is always some scam running in these bigger cities. You will have to be just as vigilant in watching for these scam artists in other cities around the Philippines. It just comes with the territory. If you don't like it the best thing you can do is get your own transportation.....though that comes with it's own set of risks.
Curious if your wife is getting a private ride just her and your child or if 6 other people are being squeezed in also? I had one driver who wanted to charge me 70 peso to take me 3 km after dark and I had two small shopping bags. I just told him good luck with your business model and took off walking. I had one of the shills at Robinsons mall want 60 php to take me and a friend to hotel Palwa. I said no thanks and walked out to the highway and about 20 meters down the road before a trike stopped and took us there. I gave him 20 peso and he wanted to make change! I gave him another 5 peso and told him keep the change with my thanks. Not all trike drivers are dicks, just like not all foreigners are dicks, at least I am not...not all the time anyway.
One time I was on my way to McDonalds with a package to mail later to Canada. After I was in McDonalds for a few minutes I realized I had left my package in the trike. I had lots of sun glasses and and other goodies in that package. When I returned I found the package on the front step of my house! He didn't try to chase me down at McDoos for a tip. He just left that package on the step of my house. So, they are not all bad. I have had some good experiences and bad experiences. I also tip them. Especially if they have their child riding with them!
Similar happened to me when my cell phone dropped out of my pocket and was wedged between the seat and the metal side. After getting home 2 hours later, I started calling the number and it kept ringing out. About 40 minutes later the trike driver dropped it off at my house and I had to run to thank/reward him. He told me the ringing made him look and find the phone but he did not know how to answer. When I asked how he knew it was mine, he said I was the only foreigner he had picked up and the phone looked expensive. It is a dual SIM with my Australian SIM as well as the Globe inserted. He was well rewarded for his honesty but he truly wasn't looking for a reward having given it to the 16 year old nephew of my partner and heading back to work. I think the majority of these guys are honest and hard working, unfortunately we seem to only remember the d#ckheads
I saw one wearing an "official tourist driver" T Shirt so that may be how to identify them. I now wish I had taken a pic as I just chuckled when I saw it and kept walking.
