And yet, the opening poster says that his dreams have been put on hold simply because it 'might' happen. That means even the perception that it might happen to you matters.

I'd think that the chance of violence against you or your family is higher in many liberal cities in the US like NYC, San Fransisco, Los Angeles, Detroit, Chicago, and many others than in many places in the Philippines. Here if you keep a smart head to your shoulders, don't show off, don't screw around with someone's young underage daughter and dump her to the side, don't go flashing money and jewelry, and stay out of the more hazardous regions including Manila, Cebu, and Angeles you'd be much safer here other then driving.

Yeah, and even crossing the main road in Daro. That place sucks trying to cross the street.

Blvd isn't any safer IMO. Especially for timid new tourists/foreigners!

I am a white woman, and never felt "threatened" walking around the streets of Dumaguete, even alone at night. Like others have said, there are definitely places I would steer clear of, but Dumaguete is probably one of the safer towns.

F.Y.I. - I was referencing those same tourists and/or timid foreigners about crossing the Blvd. It's kind of like playing chicken. Personal safety I agree 100% I have walked all over town and never felt any ill feelings or fear for safety. Crossing busy streets is another matter all together!

I have to say that Dumaguete has always been safe for me as well as all other parts of Philippines I have visited. I have a fairly good sense for danger and would strongly agree that US cities are far more likely to be dangerous than any place I have been on the Philippines so far. I have had a few incidents but all ended fairly quickly once each side could listen to the other. Filipinos by nature are far less violent than Americans I do not think that most of them want to fight with giant foreigners. I do my best to make friends and not enemies but their are some who truly hate Americans or white people or whatever. Such is life....people have a right to make choices good or bad!
Now as far as being a pedestrian.....that can be a bit scary until you get in rhythm with the locals who cross the street ! Dumaguete is easy compared to Manila dodge and weave  I do recall the first few visits I was almost clipped a few times but once I realized pedestrians didn't have the right away, the odds of getting smushed decreased exponentially . Also keep in mind the bigger vehicles are the bullies such as the Ceres liners ! If riding a motorcycle....you have to make your own safe path.
