The right to vote The right to own land The right to run for office The "right" (or maybe obligation) to pay income tax and travel tax The right (obligation) to sign up in the military to fight (and then likely die) the Chinese in the next war You can't be deported No more need to visit/pay immigration or keep up with their rules that seem to change as often as the directly of the wind. Just a few I can think of off the top of my head. For the vast majority of people I think that citizenship would be a very bad idea and provide you with nothing but extra headaches and obligations. I also suspect that getting citizenship here would cost a whole lot of money.....probably as much as a normal person would pay in visa fees over a lifetime.
OK. So are you saying that NO unmarried foreign female is allowed a pathway to Philippine citizenship? Even under the accelerated teacher-to-citizen pathway? nwlivewire
That's what the law seems to be saying. Don't shoot the messenger mate, I wasn't around in 1939 when they made this stuff up. There was another naturalization law passed in 2000 but it is only for those "born in the Philippines and residing therein since birth". It seems that single foreign women are just SOL when it comes to citizenship.
hahaha I promise I won't shoot the messenger! But if this is indeed the case, I'll just not bother to stay too long in the Philippines. There are many countries around the world where I can obtain a 2nd passport and still plant my trees - even buy the land without rights of citizenship. And do so while being a single female, too. So Belize and Nicaragua will remain on my radar. I prefer Belize as their legal system falls from British Common Law principles while Nicaragua falls from Spanish Roman Law principles. BIG difference, but I'll know more when the time comes to decide which direction to take as so much depends on which way the winds are blowing at that time. I did consider Panama, but it's too damned hot there and I wasn't impressed as they seem to have already become more "Corporate-leaning" and I'll just be a little guy doing my tree thing. So - 1- 2 - 3 for the Philippines. I'll just have to stick with my plans as I have them and not pencil in the RP as a long-term option. nwlivewire
I have only personally known two people (both men) that have claimed to have gotten a Filipino citizenship......one of them was completely full of sh*t (he was deported 6 months after telling me this fictional story for owing over $1M USD in child support back in the US and his real visa/passport status was plastered all over Thai, Philippine and US media) and the other was never verified.....and I suspect the second guy was just as full of it as the first. I have never personally seen a foreigner, that did not have a Filipino parent, holding a Philippine passport. I don't even recall hearing stories from second hand sources saying they have actually seen this either. Getting a citizenship here seems to be a very difficult thing to do and out of reach for the vast majority of expats. If you are wanting to gain dual citizenship somewhere, the Philippines is not where you should be looking.
The big one for me would simply to be to have an alternative if things were to go to hell in my birth country. There are millions of immigrants around the world who would love to have a second passport. It gives you options. nwlivewire I'm also seriously considering bugging out due to the lack of a path to citizenship. If I didn't have certain commitments rooting me down, then I might not be here. But those commitments will (grow up) soon enough. I will be looking to go to the same places as you mentioned.
Wait... We're talking about citizenship through marriage and you're asking why anyone would want a second citizenship? I would have the same question about marriage. Of the two, citizenship seems useful.
Citizenship through marriage is guaranteed, to the sucker's club. Benefits, can't think of any. But you'll continue to get ****ed over through life like the rest of the suckers. I can print you a card if you like. Show it to the locals when you try to buy something. You thought long nose prices were bad. Try paying sucker's prices.
