“Australian, American ambassadors: Shut your mouth.”

That is the message of presidential candidate Rodrigo Duterte to a pair of ambassadors who have criticized him over his recent remarks about rape that have caused an international firestorm.

The Davao City mayor made the comment on Wednesday, a day after his tirade against Australian Ambassador Amanda Gorely, who had criticized him over controversial comments he made regarding the rape and death in 1989 of an Australian missionary at a Davao prison.

“Rape and murder should never be joked about or trivialised. Violence against women and girls is unacceptable anytime, anywhere,” Gorely had said.

United States Ambassador Philip Goldberg had chimed in on the criticism.

“I can only agree with the colleague from the Australian Embassy,” Goldberg said in a television interview.
“Any statements by anyone, anywhere that either degrade women or trivialize issues so serious as rape or murder, are not ones that we condone,” he added.

But Duterte brushed off the criticism, instead saying the envoys had no business talking to him about Philippine affairs.

When he referred to "Philippine affairs" was he talking about political policies or all the mistresses of the controlling class of womanizing politician here? (Rodrigo Duterte: Yes, I'm a womanizer)

If he was talking about world political policy then I think fair play is fair play. So the next time a typhoon hits the Philippines (like what are the changes of that happening) , or other natural disaster that there has been no anticipated response plan developed or resources set aside for, maybe the time for the "Shut you mouth" fair play response from other foreign ambassadors as the Philippine's government runs around the world asking for financial help with no accountability for actual use of the money given.

Now if he was talking about womanizing, well maybe we should all just should "shut our mouths" end that conversation now...... and anticipate our next "Philippine affair"

This is a follow up interesting article. obviously this man has a lot "Pinoy Pride". t least at the end of the article he says that it is the US and Australia's choice if they server ties, the rest of the countries out there I guess do not get a choice in making that decision.

 

Perhaps he thinks that if they leave China will come, and then he WILL get first entry to the next rape victim.

Sorry guys, but Duterte is right on this one. The U.S. shouldn't be in any way influencing the Philippines election. This is much like when the Pope called out Trump. It's a political move.

Go ahead and call out a direct threat. It's fine for heads of state in Asia to call out Trump when he says that he will pull out of the area and that Japan and S. Korea should do X to defend themselves. It's fine for the president of Mexico to call out Trump in response to the wall talk. Ambassador's need to leave this to a higher pay grade and keep their traps shut.

The U.S. isn't here to do the Philippines a favor. The U.S. got to where it is today at least partially by playing wold politics. The U.S. has its own interests in being here or we wouldn't be here. Part of that strategy in this region is to be a counter-weight to China. To do that, the U.S. needs support of the region. The Philippines could always boot the U.S. and move over to China's corner, which would hurt that strategy. So we shouldn't be so quick to point out that we could do X in response to the Philippines doing something we perceive as ungrateful.

If the U.S. really wanted to make a statement on this, then that statement would have come from a higher level U.S. government official.

 

IF both Mr. Trump and Mayor Duterte win their respective presidential elections, political detente will be wide open.

 

Does the US really need the Philippines or is it just pride thing on the US's part? Originally I think the Ambassadors were addressing the rape issue and the attitude toward rape, until Duerate took it to a much higher level. Pride on both countries part in my eyes. . (move to controversial arena)

This I can agree upon, I think the Ambassadors statements were just part of the get out the "women's vote concept" by the administrations in powers while the leaders of the each country can sort of yawn, look at each other wide eyed and say "Say What?, we said that?".

 

Does it sound to you like the American ambassador is trying to influence the Philippine elections? It sounds to me like he is just calling prick a prick., in diplomatic language of course.
