This appears to be the war for drugs, or who gets to enjoy the 1000% profits. There's seldom a serious investigation, no witnesses, and no arrests. It's beginning to look more like Mexico rather than the successful approach in Portugal.

 

Just look at Mexico, they never seem to get over all this, and how many years they have been trying.

The thing with the death squads might have worked in Davao on a local level, their potential targets were either smart enough to go elsewhere or they got killed. But if they now put the pressure on them *everywhere*, leaving no room to go, there will be a different reaction. It's illusional to think you can kill them all before they get ther sh*t together and learn to shoot back. And it's also illusional that these people just go back to the rice fields out of fear of being killed.

It's just a question of time until this gets really ugly. Right now people are still surprised and there might be a lot of easy targets. But this will change. Families or even whole villages might start to sympathize with the drug gangs, because they offer some degree of protection against death squads that come to kill for even minor offenses. Who are you likely to trust more - unknown guys on motorbikes that come, kill somebody and drive away - or the drug dealer from around the corner? He might be a criminal but at least you know he's not going to mess around with you as long as you don't mess with his business. The guys on the motorbike? You never know, they might just pick the wrong house or whatever.

Even so - it's murder wether they kill a drug dealer or his innocent neighbor, and people will get pretty upset about that once more of them have at least one family member killed.

 

You have it wrong. The men on a motorbike in full face helmets are the executioners that have been around for years, long before Duterte.

 

Excuse my ignorance but it doesn't matter how long they have been there or who installed them in the first place - people who take the law into their own hands and try to cut out justice from the equation have only one place in a democracy and that's jail.

On a side note these guys might have a hard time here in the area being the only ones with helmets

 

I think you are missing the point that if criminals were actually being imprisoned, it would be much less likely that the vigilantes would exist.

Two men on a motorcycle with guns happens because there is almost no chance for justice. Even if an arrest were made and someone came up with the money to hire a prosecutor, it can take years before there is a judgment. If you can solve that problem first, you might have a chance at solving the second, but not before. I know you feel that people getting their own justice is a bad thing but feelings aren't going to get anywhere. Now, if you thought of a practical way that people could get justice without vigilantes, I'm willing to listen and I may well support your proposal.

Have you thought of a practical way that the average Filipino in the street can receive justice? As I said, feeling will get you nowhere.

 

Socially, vigilantism type activities occur when the justice systems give impunity to too many people because of politics or wealth/power and the community runs out of patience for a corrupt justice system to correct itself,. Vigilantism starts handing out justice itself…. Changing the justice landscape from one of impunity for the well placed individual and giving some power to the ordinary citizen. Is it right?… probably not… but probably no better than the present system in place. Vigilantism can be eliminated, or at least reduced by operating a fair balanced justice system.

The Maguindanao massacre of 34 journalists , occurred on November 23, 2009, and still no convictions, almost 7 years. This type of justice causes vigilantism. The clan leader died of natural causes due to age, one of the accused got out for bail and ran for office last again recently. Impunity is available for those in power who can deliver the votes when necessary.

In The Philippines 176 journalist have been murder since 1986, no murders have been solved.http://newsinfo.inquirer.net/.../duterte-endorses-killing... That is called impunity in action. Vigilantism is just the opposite.
