Meet up?

Dear All,

My wife and I (now mid 50) are considering moving to Dumaguete in a couple of years.
We spent some time there last Christmas and liked what we saw so far.
In a couple of weeks (from July 20th to 25th) we'll be visiting again.
We'd like to get in touch with locals to talk about perks & pitfalls of living in Dumaguete.

Welcome to the forum. Perhaps you could tell us a bit about yourself, nothing incriminating of course.

 

Johan I welcome you and Dianne back to Paradise. McDonalds by the park is a good place to meet English speaking ex-pats from about 6 am to 930 am and also WhyNots where a goodly number of Europeans congregate. You will find varied opinions so seek several.

We are a dutch couple looking to relocate to a warm country with friendly people in about 3 years. That period is determined by our hope that by that time our 2 kids will be largely selfsupporting.
In recent years we've spent our holidays mostly in SE Asia and liked it very much. Last Christmas we visited the Philippines for the first time and liked the people and the country. It is now considered the first option to relocate to.
In december we travelled through Cebu, Bohol and Dumaguete. Needless to say Dumaguete ticked most of our boxes.
This summer we will first spend some time on Palawan before returning to Dumaguete.
If we still like it we plan to visit more often and do one or more trial runs.
Basically we are looking for a place that has a warm climate, preferably near the sea, with access to food, supplies etc, with some nightlife and nice restaurants although we don't plan on eating out every day. Of course it helps that prices are fairly low.
We realize fully that prices are low because it is a developing country, and that that comes with it's own problems. But we don't seek to live a western lifestyle; we seek to enjoy the rest of our lifes and if possible do volunteer work to make ourselves useful.

Last time we had lunch at Whynot but did not interact with other guests.
One gentleman uninvitedly remarked that it is a beautiful country gone to pieces because the stupidity and corruption of its inhabitants (or words to that effect).
I feel that as a foreigner it is probably best not to interact about local politics; we know (sort of) what to expect so to complain afterwards would not be wise...

Johan, some who can't adjust to reality think the grass is greener on the other side of the fence but those who are old timers to traveling do in Rome like Romans do and adjust and accept things as they are.
