LEADING convenience store operator Philippine Seven Corp. (PSC) is hatching a more affordable 7-Eleven franchising package, seeking to cement market leadership as competition heats up in this 24/7 retailing format.
Seven Corp. (PSC) is hatching a more affordable 7-Eleven franchising package, seeking to cement market leadership as competition heats up in this 24/7 retailing format.

PSC is now piloting a franchising program whereby people who are hard-working and with a good track record can invest less than P1 million to put up a 7-Eleven store, much lower than the usual P3.5-million investor package offered by the company, PSC president Jose Victor Paterno told reporters in a press briefing ahead of the company’s stockholders meeting on Thursday.

The company has pioneered the convenience store format in the Philippines as the master licensee owner for 7-Eleven but this retailing space has attracted new players in recent years.

7-Eleven franchising for less than P1M

To late now for Dumaguete. I wanted to go in on a 7-11 franchise, or their competitor MiniStop with a local friend here several years ago. Back then the franchising fee was $50k USD but that included all equipment plus a full initial inventory. I'd be curious if these P1 M "franchising package" includes equipment and a full inventory stock. ROI back when I was looking at it was estimated at 3-4 years (I suspect sooner if you find an area that doesn't already have one on every corner).

The catch here is that only locals my own a franchise and 7-11 HQ isn't going to allow a foreigner to buy a franchise under a corporation that's used to get around Philippines laws. The second you show up for the mandatory franchise presentation they will shut that down.

I stood at a crossroad in Taipei and counted fourteen 7-11 stores without having to walk anywhere.
A few years ago there was a gas station in Dauin, one on a side street in Bacong and one just before Robinson.
At last count there are 15 gas stations between Dauin and Robinson.
If 7-11's go up like that I'll be very happy. No more need to go to the city for soft ice cream

It's only a matter of time that gasoline stations will shut down even faster than they were started up due to lack of enough customers and a turn over which hardly can made any profit.. Same applies for 7/11 stores. What they do now to minimize the investor package to only 1 million peso is to try to keep on track to extend their network. But even a 7/11 store needs a minimum visit of daily customers to be profitable of course.

It seems easy to have a 7-11 type store. Just take Mom 'n Pops sari sari store, put up a 6-12 sign and put up the prices by 25%. Voila! A 7-11 type store.
