The city government is embarking on a bold revamp of city traffic routes by banning big cargo trucks, buses, jeepneys and multicabs to ply the city’s main roads during the day, in order to east traffic congestion.

As part of the multi-pronged strategy to resolve the decades-old traffic mess, the city administration is inclined to impose an expanded ban on entry of all trucks and bus to the Central Business District (CBD) commonly known as downtown.

Already the traffic experiment is now going on in certain parts of the day.

Under the proposal presented by a team of academicians, all vehicles of more than four (4) wheels will not be permitted to enter the downtown area from 4:00AM to 9:00PM to further ease the traffic congestion.

Silliman University has taken the lead by allowing the vehicles of their students, faculty and staff to be parked in new parking areas soon to be opened within the campus.

However, some businessmen expressed their anxiety of the new traffic rule as this would entail additional pay for their personnel who will have to render overtime to ensure a steady supply of goods to their establishments.

Councilor Manny Arbon noted that in the interest of the majority, the entrepreneurs can simply adjust the duty hours of their workers who could make the deliveries during the allowable period or utilize smaller vans for urgent and emergency delivery.

The plan to relocate the passenger terminals for out of town jeepneys and multi-cabs is also being seriously considered to further reduce the volume of vehicles entering the CBD while incoming buses will have to take the Bunao-Motong-Taclobo- Bagacay route from 6:00AM to 9:00PM. Outbound buses can pass through its present route. Bus trucks, jeeps ban soon enforced - NegrosChronicle.com

Academicians ?? these people must be from the hole in the pointed head Academy, a blind man could tell that it is not the 4 or more wheels vehicles that cause the problem it is the 2 & 3 wheels that f*ck it up for everybody..

So jeepneys with 4 wheels only will be ok? How about trucks that remove a couple wheels when they want to go downtown? (You may not see my tongue in cheek but I suspect you sense it LOL)

I still argue it is not the two wheeled vehicles, there would be basically no traffick congestion at all, dangerous unpredictable madness, yes....but it would be fast dangerous unpredictable madness. The roads here were just not designed to have this many 4 wheeled vehicles driving on them. IMO, the vast majority of "streets" in Dumaguete are nothing more than glorified sidewalks.

I don't think keeping the large vehicles off of the streets that were designed to actually handle large vehicles is going to do much of anything to alleviate traffick. Happy they are banned from the Boulevard though, might actually turn in to a place where someone could sit and enjoy a few drinks for lunch during the day.

I'm sure we all remember the trike strike last year sometime when they dropped the rates! The roads in and around the city were empty, you could actually drive in a proper fashion for a few hours. But then again will they actually remember this,I doubt it.

We just came back from town and once again i fail to see all these fast motorbikes, i did see a few but normally they are the ones coming at you on the wrong side of the road the rest just dawdle along hogging the middle of the road.
Regarding the streets in Dumaguete i find most are plenty wide enough for 2 cars to pass but maybe not 2 buses or large trucks.
The problems occur when the motorbikes start being double or even treble parked cutting the street width down so only 1 car can pass at a time.
Simple solution is do not allow this kind of parking, if there is no space left then they have to park somewhere there is and walk to where they are going or if too fat/lazy take a tricycle.

Driving style aside it's too simple to criticize bikes and tricycles, just imagine all those people would be driving cars instead.
The typical pickup / SUV takes the parking and road space of 6 to 8 motorbikes and usually transports less people than ride on those bikes.

I was chatting with one of the new City counsel members a few weeks ago, she is an Attorney and used to work at the Law office of our Lawyer before her election. She said the City hall and all the City government offices are to be moved to an area off of the bypass road in Talay. That old city hall area would make for a common parking area for motor bikes. Instead of allowing them to park on the sidewalks and loading unloading lanes on Perdices st and the side streets. It is unbelievable but true to see M/C's parked 2 deep and a Auto or truck double parked with them blocking an entire lane while a Traffic cop stands close by blowing his whistle at some ghostly offender. I find the trikes to be a problem because they do not pull over to pickup or let off passengers instead stopping in the middle of the street, mostly because the stopping area is clogged with unpermitted street vendors.

The width of the street is not much of an issue, when people have no discipline with their parking techniques. Most street here cannot handle one randomly parked vehicle, doesn’t really matter if it is motorcycle intruding on the lane of traffic, or a Trike, a multi-cab or a truck. The type of vehicle argument could go on endlessly. Once a vehicle blocks a traffic lane, then the traffic is slowed down to a crawl whatever the type of vehicle.

Solution: discipline of the parking standards which will probably only happen when traffic parking tickets are issued on the spot for all type of vehicles, which could affect votes, meaning it may never happen. However you do it, you have to get parking discipline to improve traffic. Any program for traffic developed by anyone is worthless if it is not followed by the drivers and parkers, and the city administration and enforcers. Does any of enforcers have the balls to do that here in Dumaguete?… only one I know that enforces the laws over her friendships wears boots and does not have balls at all as well as I can tell.

I have read of people getting a parking ticket on this very forum. It costs 50 pesos. Big deal. People with those big SUVs will see it as the cost of driving and continue to do it. Back to the drawing board.
