Could not find the first post on Andy's but I went there this evening....

Ordered sweet n sour pork and a chicken chop suey. Ordered a beer and got a nice cold one. The place is spotless clean and the projection tv is not too loud or annoying.

BUT..... AT 295P Per dish the servings were way too small. The food was good and served in a timely fashion, the server was polite and attentive but we (2 only) needed a big mac after we left to fill us up.

I could have had the same thing for half the price in a couple other places in town. Andy's has a lot of good things going for it but at these prices one should expect to be full or take a doggy bag home.

Good place to take your sweetie for a snack and a cold beer.....

We were at Robinsons Mall a bit late last night. First time we’ve been out after dark in months. Decided that we needed to checkout Andy’s Golden Grill, located just a few kilometers away. Found it quickly on Google Maps, but, in real life, it’s closer to the National Highway than Google Maps showed.

Andy came over to the table upon our arrival to greet us and explain the newest menu addition, which is a 7 day red wine marinated beef coupled with Swiss style noodles (spaetzle).

Ordered vegetable soup, the beef special, ostrich Madagascar for the wife, apple pie and vanilla ice cream.

The vegetable soup tasted exactly like homemade potato soup, except there was no evidence of potatoes. It was just a cream soup, but very tasty. I enjoyed it a lot, but the wife said it was just okay for her.

The marinated beef was mixed with various vegetables and came with homemade spaetzle. It was quite tasty.

The ostrich Madagascar was cooked to perfection. Juicy and tender, it was a joy to eat! The fusilli noodles that came with it were nothing special.

The wife ordered a glass of Italian white wine, while I went with the red. The glasses were nice quality and unexpected.

The portion of vanilla ice cream portion was quite small. Ended up with one spoonful to each of us. Kind of disappointing.

Apple pie filling was pretty good, but the crust wasn’t quite cooked, so tasted ‘floury’. The wife enjoyed the filling though.

Service was perfect. Seating was perfunctory, yet pleasant. Parking was no problem whatsoever. Bill was 1,485p, so not for the faint hearted.

Overall, this is one of the best restaurant meals I’ve had in my 18 years of visiting / living in the Philippines. Of course that includes Cebu, Davao, Manila, Makati, etc…

I gotta' admit that the looks are off-putting, but the taste was good. I will go back, unlike the other restaurants I've tried in Dumaguete for the past 11 months.

dont get me wrong .............if any of the chefs/cooks were worth their salt they wouldnt be in dgte unless they were owners

IMHO too many restaurants here try to be something they are not or never will be. cooking Thai/Korean/Chinese/Italian with chefs who have never been out side Dumaguete and charging prices that drive away customers, and with the lazy always say die attitude of the staff

there isnt a single retuarant here that punches above its weight

Nice to read these comments thanks guys. We're going there soon for a try.
First night will be our personal favourite TRUE LOVE as always.
Be curious to know what other restaurants your referring to. Although not living here I spend quite a lot of time in and around Dumaguete. Personally consider the city has an abundance of very fine restaurants.

I'm sure we have different tastes Bruce. For me, there isn't a very fine restaurant in the Philippines, but I've only been here about 5 dozen times and lived here on and off for 18 years. There is a very fine French restaurant in Hanoi, plus some great Chinese restaurants in Hong Kong and even fantastic Singaporean restaurants in Singapore. That being said, I don't come to the Philippines for the food.

I don't believe there is any restaurant in this country deserving of a Michelin star... :(

Not exactly sure what your 18 years living here and 60 visits has to do with food, perhaps your referring to your length of time allowing you to try so many restaurants.

Wonder if you have ever tried circa 1900 or maya, both in Cebu. Musuem cafe in Bacolod.

Perhaps your a food connoisseur unlike most of us.

Personally feel your far to harsh on restaurants here, I readily admit most are not suitable to Western tastes how ever I would suggest there are restaurants here of absoloutly top quality.

Feel no need to quantify my post with my past living experience how ever wjll say I am widely traveled and been involved in the food industry in Europe.

I've tried a lot of restaurants in the Philippines in my 18 years (hence my reference to trips / time). Have tried Maya and it was horrible, except the guacamole and tequila. I used to travel to Mexico several times a year just to get good Mexican food. Have tried other Abaca restaurants with mixed results. A Cafe used to be pretty good, but has turned into Abaca Bakery and now is mediocre.

Food connoisseur? Not me! I've just been traveling for (work and pleasure) the past 40 years and gotten spoiled by peaches in Georgia, oranges in Florida, pears in Oregon and Washington, etc... similar to restaurants. Once I have eaten in the finest restaurants in New Orleans, why would I care to accept the mediocre foods at New Orleans Bourbon Street restaurant at Ayala Mall in Cebu?

All-in-all, I'd be happy to find a clean restaurant here (with a clean kitchen) that knew how to properly spice and grill a simple fish and not tell me silly things like they have no fish in stock.

Sorry for the rant. I'm truly happy someone enjoys the restaurants here. Everyone has different past experiences when it comes to food. I might think a particular dish is excellent, while someone else thinks it's bad. No worries on my part. I don't know what you or anyone else enjoys, nor can I claim to be an authority on good taste. I just know what I enjoy. Good luck to all of us!

Meanwhile I'm trying to learn how to cook everything myself.

Note: for the long term, I'll be moving back to Cebu in 3-4 months, but realize that the restaurants there are not much better than Dumaguete. Most likely, the only solution will be for me to cook everything myself from tried and true recipes.

Note 2: Mickeys Japanese Cakes across from Ayala Mall is pretty good. Are they as good as the cake shops that I've frequented in so many cities and villages in Japan? No, of course not!
