It can be stressful when you're in the Philippines walking with a foreign guy. It keeps me on my toes. I do smile at people in places where I'm expected to but I think that makes me an easy prey.
One time, I let my guard down because I wasn't with a foreigner, I was drinking with a relative. We were dressed like most locals (I always do)--flip-flops, t-shirts and short pants, money in pockets, no wristwatch or jewelries but I needed a purse for my toilet paper. And then I responded to a question from a chatty floor manager about where we live saying, "we're just nearby, we just walked" stating the specific place. On our way home, two young men in motorbike passed us a couple of times and my companion said, "this looks like a hold-up," but I insisted they were driving slow because they were learning how to drive. She walked ahead evading the attack which saved most of what we had--her phone and my money in her pocket. They took my cheap Phil phone and my cheap purse but the horror of being held at gunpoint haunted me for months. Maybe somebody heard our conversation? Being chatty was stupid but I didn't think something bad happens to me at a place where I grew up along with 60 % residents who were my relatives. Maybe a coincidence but it looked very timely. It makes me more cautious when I walk with a foreigner.
Violence is not the only problem. Sometimes that happy face of the Filipina with a foreign guy can come across as arrogance. I read stuff on facebook about the locals' perception of the Filipina with a "puti" (white guy) and they think it make things harder for them. I smile and act politely but I wasn't lucky one time when I stood with my bf at a hotel desk. We had agreed that I pay the room so we can save his ¥ to be used when we return to Japan. I asked the staff a question but the reply was addressed to my bf. Then the front desk would "accidentally" miss our packed breakfast request the following morning. This too, could be a coincidence but the incident before that was deliberate. I know I'm not at an age to get jealous but it still annoyed me when the front desk girl examining my bf's passport read his name out loud to her colleague inserting her first name and revelled at the sound of her "married name" to my face. I can't blame the Filipina to be not smiling at people they don't know as what I've read in one thread here. It's sad when you go to stores and people are eager to talk to "Sir" than their fellow Filipina.

Just a guess but were you walking in the Piapi area? There are some areas that are more prone to holdups than others and that area was previously referred to by one of the other members as a place where he had his bag snatched.

 If they're like in their late 20s now, do you think they'll read this and get angrier? Anyway, I didn't file a report, and stopped that stupid hairstyle so they might not recognize me now.

Nope, it happened in Sibulan, the bar is gone now. For five years, I hadn't visited home so I was surprised that my partner could tell a possible hold up. I learned the next day that it was already happening even in remote areas.

I suspect there will be a lot more of this...or maybe all those former drug dealers will suddenly go get legitimate jobs and go clean. Oh, a guy can't get a decent job if they are over 30 and has dark skin in the Philippines because employers are allowed to discriminate based on age and skin tone you say? Well, I guess most of them won't be able to turn away from crime to survive even if they wanted to. Petty theft, hold ups and even more serious crimes like kidnapping for ransom are still options for them now. Out of the shanty town corners pushing drugs to 1% of the population that made a conscious decision to put a chemical in their body and into your neighborhoods they go.

I don't think Birdwatch was talking about a recent event. Did you even read the thread?

Yeah, I did. "One time" could have been a couple months ago or it could have been 10 years ago. Did you read it?

Right, but you went off as if it were certain that it was recent?

No, I said I think more of that is likely to start happening. I made no comment on when the original incident happened.
