The pain of time and cost of the paperwork seems wasteful and very irritating to me. Even if ending up at the same cost and time, I would rather avoid the high cost of document verification et al and fly to Hong Kong or even back to the States. Kind of a two fur, or a free vacation, something more than a bunch of receipts.

Don't know if I am cheap, a tight a$$, frugal, hate stupid paperwork, or too broke to dump a bunch of money on a piece of paper And take a vacation/honeymoon??? hmmmm, now that I wrote it, seems like the last one. :centeruniverse: haha

I know it may be late to the party, but I got divorced in Guam and had the Consul General in Guam recognize the Divorce and it was very simple and only cost $30 USD (I had my lawyer in Guam do it for me). have you tried to get the same done in USA from Philippine consul or embassy? I then registered the divorce with the NRO easy peasy!

It was done in the US at the Philippine Embassy in the US, that is where it must be done. The major cost wasn't from the US ends but from the Philippine Embassy end which is a nightmare from everything I heard from many others who have had to deal with the Philippine Embassy in the US and the nonsense paperwork which is why I decided on a service as it would also be costly for me to do it in person. The service I chose wasn't that expensive though and most of the costs from all the different stops the paperwork had to make and especially the Philippine embassy.

The Guam route would have yielded the same issues requiring the Philippine Embassy in Guam (if they have one or it would have to go to the one in the US). The easier method would be marrying overseas by far and just saying screw the Philippines but I had already started the process and had it 1/2-2/3 of the way done other then a final fee and a bit of a wait. The problem comes in when the gal really really wants to marry in her home country with her family present and have it recognized by the NSO here as its a tricky situation. NSO won't say your married to two people but they won't accept your filing the new marriage until the old one was settled in their records in a way leaving you in a sort of limbo. I would expect this to also cause issues for any wanting to get residency through their spouse as well in the Philippines as NSO wouldn't really recognize the 2nd marriage as valid yet can't really accuse you of bigamy.

Guam also though only recognizes its own divorces and per Guam law one must the ex's signature notarized by the US Embassy in whatever country they reside in and then can avail of a 7 day divorce. Otherwise its a 90 day residency. I decided the Nevada way was easier for me as they are more lenient in time and I could get a room for rent fairly cheap. My ex was very heavily refusing to sign w/o a very large chunk of money and her own crap signed and I was having no part of that.

Check out marriage in New Zealand. I (US citizen) married my Filipina wife there last summer. We did the application ahead of time, then picked up the license on day 2 after arrival, then got married on day 3 and registered it day 4. The office in Auckland is really nice. It's pretty easy: only needed our passports and my divorce certificate from my prior marriage. You can even choose to get married there at the office, but we enjoyed our beach wedding. I know a couple who got married in HK within the last year. It was quick enough once the preliminary preparations were done except for the part where he needed two witnesses and no one around HK city hall spoke English...

Another guy, Canadian, told me he got married in Fiji maybe 10yrs ago to protect his interests back home

Im not sure they have to recognise marriage from other country. Imagine the case of samesex marriage. I doubt theyll recognise that.

They recognize marriages from most countries. You likely have to show/file the marriage certificate but they will almost certainly accept it as a legitimate marriage. Not even remotely close to same sex marriages.

Im not suggesting its the same. Just that the assumption that they will automatically recognise a marriage if legal in another country.

I don't think any country just recognizes a marriage that happened outside their country. They wouldn't really have any way of knowing. Proof would have to be shown if you ever wanted to gain whatever perks the country offers to married couples. A proper marriage certificate should be more than enough proof for the Philippines. I'd even be willing to bet that they would recognize a same sex marriage from the States of presented one. That's just pure speculation though, I could be very wrong on that. (OK, I might not be willing to bet serious money on it...a beer though, you're on.)
