My husband and I are thinking of moving to Dumaguete, so I am thankful I found this forum. I know I can find all the answers to my questions here. Looking forward to hearing all about Dumaguete and what everyone thinks of living there.

If you have children then please understand that education here is totally useless.... my step-daughter age 15 is at the equivalent Western standard of about age 10. The teachers are poor and they have no idea how to teach or set appropriate work; they only know how to play games. Classes can be a very wide age range, so a girl age 15 can be in a class with boys (men) age 30 or more and be expected to change her clothes in the classroom (while male teacher is there also!). The best educational value teacher seems able to find from Saint Valentines Day is to give the children hearts and tell them to give them to 'friends' in the class.... I call this a dating show and encourages dating between these children when my aim is to get my child to focus on education and not boyfriends. It also gives the older boys/men a chance to try their luck with the younger girls in a 'seemingly' innocent way. When the parent has to fight against low moral standards within the schools of a so-called 'religious county' then there is something very wrong.

It may be helpful for you to read as much of the informative forum history as you can digest. Realize the membership is international and there are positive and negative views. Good luck.

@Notmyrealname thanks for that! My daughter isn't in school yet, but obviously will be soon. How's the internet? Would it be an option to homeschool my daughter using US school sites?

Unlike the States where this general question can be answered in general, in the Philippines it is best to think of this as a neighborhood question. It is possible to live 5 minutes walk away from someone, one has fiber and the has I-think-I-can, I-think-I-can internet access. Said with humor but still true.

Ok, I understand. So I need look at where we move to and ask around for the best internet, or make sure the building has fiber internet before moving in. If we did manage to get a place with fiber internet, is it decent then? Where homeschooling would be an option? Are there blocked sites? Thanks again!

You may want to consider some other areas. :o o: I'm told there are some good international schools, but they are in places like Manila, Cebu, Davao. There have been several threads about home schooling. There maybe enough people to put together a group of parents interested in doing this in Dumaguete. See link below for home schooling info.

I have not been lucky enough to find a place with fiber Internet but I have been lucky enough to find some places with good Internet and plenty of bandwidth . . that is UNTIL all the neighbors find out its working for me and then they all sign up for the same plan and the bandwidth is shared by everybody to the point that it sucks.

I am intending to homeschool my daughter as I realise I can tell her that the formula for ammonia is NH3 and she will already know more than if she was at school for a week. I may not teach her much about cutting up coloured paper or writing jingles or doing silly dances but 'hey' I think she will cope without those 'essential' skills. Perhaps someone in Dumaguete can act as a form of coordinator for those who wish to homeschool; there are many options to help each other with the skills we individually possess.

Thank you all so much for your help. I will be sure to check out the homeschooling posts that were mentioned to see what my options are. From the sounds of it we may decide to go somewhere else. You all have been a huge help. Thanks again!
