Does anyone know good places to buy ice cream (in a tub and not just a single cone) in or near Dumaguete? I mean like the creamy vanilla ice cream they serve at Lantaw restaurant (I do not ask them who supplies as I assume it is a trade secret).

In Valencia just the top the left of The Red Table there is an ice cream stand called 2 scopes 10 pesos. They sell home made ice cream by the gallon. Reasonably priced and fairly good.

I just heard today that a hardware store, Rejoice Hardware and Electrical, (which also happens to be one of the best hardware stores in town), sells their own home made ice cream and it is said to be the best in town. But that was a subjective opinion from a gent who is lactose intolerant but he says it is worth it to take his pills just to eat that ice cream.

Anyone else tried it (or is it one of those secrets we are not supposed to share or it will all be sold out too quick . . shhhhhhhh)

Well, I go to a sari sari store very near to where I live, one that sells Selecta-brand ice cream in 1.5l tubs, and convince them to regularly order me one or two tubs of "Super Thick Vanilla" a week. Costs about 250p. The system works quite well. Great for making mango and banana smoothies... I've found a willing shop near each of the three places I've lived in around Dumaguete. Maybe I'll try the 'gourmet' joints mentioned in earlier posts some old day, but of course they won't be as good as the TipTop brand I grew up on in New Zealand...

If you go to Lee ( plaza hypermart ) or Robinsons, they have Selecta Super Thick Ice Cream. It is the best ice cream I have had in the Philippines and comes in several flavours. It appears to be more creamy than the rest. There is also a local brand " Panda" which I've never tried. Nothing can touch U.K. "Cornish Ice Cream" full of cream and the best taste ever.

You have to have the Winner's vote for naming one of my Cornish homeland's best products (pasties being the other!). I have the recipes for both but have not tried to make them yet. I would need a good supply of fresh full-cream milk (for the clotted cream, of course) and good beef (to make a pasty and then accept it will have no swede) and I am not sure if either exist locally.

Regarding the "fresh, full-cream milk", the man who runs the sari-sari store across the road from my house has a side job delivering fresh milk from his relative's dairy cows... He's going to give us a sample soon. My wife is from a dairy farming family in New Zealand - she'll be a good judge of the product. Let me know if you're interested in a follow-up. (And I think I saw swedes at Lee Hypermart, but they may have been danes).
