Is there a right way here in da Fils? Having my floors tiled as we chat. Certainly different here. cement about 2" thick and tile adhesive mixed in. Not one tile has come lose, 3 floors @150 sq meters. Various tilers so can't recommend anybody.
We have a prob here with the second floor tiles popping, when they go its usually in the night and makes a noise like a shotgun going off. My theory of this is sudden temp changes as usually happens after a long hot spell, then the temp suddenly drops alot. Too much hassle to get relaid for now as the dust issue.
When Papa (a Constructor/Carpenter) laid our Tiles he started out around 1cm thick Tile Adhesive in the Kitchen, and by the time they got to the other end of the house, using a water level marking the walls and measuring down, as well as using a level bar over the Tiles, the Adhesive went to around 2/2.5cm thick. He also only used the adhesive, he did not mix with the cement as he told me the cement would be too hard and would crack and most likely end up cracking the tiles over time, so advised me he would only use adhesive for laying tiles. He has worked for the past 20+ years locally assisting in the building of many of the local Resorts around here and learnt his trade along the way, almost two years on and not a single crack or loose tile which I am very surprised with, as his Cement floor here is laid over a rock foundation with no reinforcement in the 4 inch thick concrete flooring whatsoever...
If he is looking for a small job, I need some tiles laid. Since you speak highly of him, and if he is willing to come to Sibulan for a 6 or 8 sqm tiling job then shoot me a pm
I posted pics in a separate thread so lets talk about it there Trades & Labor - Looking to get this tiling done Or just send private message. Jack's gonna get peeved at me if I keep stealing his threads
My tiller could use some help, got a terrace 15m X 2.5 m. needs the ground to be prepared and 15 m role bars going in and concreted and tiled and a balcony needs tiling 15x 2.5. PM me Brian, but let Dave have preference. Cheers.
I'm not a cement guy but I have a theory about loose tiles. When my house was built I noticed the guys would add water to the mortar as it got old and stiff. Hardening cement is a chemical reaction that can't be reversed by adding water. On subsequent work they tossed mortar when it got stiff and there were no more loose tiles. It was hard to sell them on this idea , they thought it was wasteful.
