The Philippines has "lemon laws". I once got a vehicle from a car lot and the transmission went out within a week. X-wife went to a government office (can't remember which one) and came back with a paper from them giving the car lot 3 choices: Fix the transmission free of charge. Take the car back and refund the full amount paid for it. Replace the car with another one of equal value. They fixed the transmission at no cost to me (although they were not very happy about having to do it). On top of that, selling a vehicle that was not properly imported is illegal for the car lot to do. That could likely be dealt with quickly with a strongly worded letter from a lawyer.
Great to know they have "Lemon Laws" here in the Philippines, Australia has nothing like that and we get screwed if we buy a new car that is a POS! I bought a brand new Car that within hours of getting it home I found it had been in an accident and poorly repaired (with only 23km's on the Odo! It was a special Order so I test drove another new Car and bought mine sight unseen but with the spec's I was after) NOTHING I could do as they claimed I must have crashed it on the Saturday afternoon on my way home or Sunday and repaired the LHR Quarter panel and resprayed it along with replacing two left doors and front mudguard before taking it back at opening time Monday morning! I WISH Oz had Lemon Laws... But; my reply above was in regards to the Car Sales place the OP posted, as it looks like one of those "Import Yards" I have read about many times in the past regards imports that have been bought in in pieces, welded back together and sold as a Jap Import. Before coming here to live, I once contacted one of them on Facebook regards buying a modified Suzuki Van (built to my colour choice along with Mag wheels, Air-con, striping, body kit, new interior etc) who confirmed to me that they do that (bring in and weld back together) but know people who can register into my name, I politely passed their kind offer and unliked the page... I had previously read online several stories of people getting stung buying chop-chop Cars so wanted to be 100% sure before I ordered a Van from them...
These are easy to spot. If the turn signal is on the right of the steering wheel make sure you take it to a mechanic you trust to have it inspected. Better yet, just avoid discount "Japanese imports" all together. Haven't met a mechanic yet in the Philippines that I felt was competent enough to completely put together a car.
I was reading before online regards Importing Cars (would love to import a LHD Hotrod 1928 to 1948) and came across an article about Importers converting RHD to LHD and to avoid around 7000php using a LHD Rack & Pinion they simply cut and shut the RHD Rack! NO THANK YOU!! Do ALL American Cars have the Indicators on the left side of the steering column? I never noticed with the LHD Cars I worked on in Oz as we have many makes there from around the world in RHD form and many Euro Cars also had the Indicators on the left side and Wipers/ headlight switches on the right, so it is a matter of adapting to what you buy there.
I thought the 'lemon laws' applied only to new cars. My wife and I viewed many used cars during Feb/March this year at various sales centres and was told at all of them there was limited warranty. Upon being asked what they would do if the engine blew within a few days, we were told that they would fit a replacement but that WE would have to buy it! However, the 'proof is in the pudding' and Wyre's experience shows that what they tell us and what is true may not be the same!
Apparently there was a lemon law thrown on the books in 2013 or 2014 that applies to new cars. My experience was before that law was passed. What my x-wife did was something else. I only called it a lemon law because what that paper said basically worked the same. I'll send her a message and ask what that paper was about and where she got it. Not sure she will answer though. The last message I got from her said: "Shove that corn up ur @ss f*cker!"
So you get on well then. Btw, why did she specify corn; I would have thought a jack fruit to be more painful.
Point and Question: Point is, they are easy to spot if they have a sticker on them that says Rusco Question is, could I buy a steering column and dash from a junk yard in Canada or US for this make of car, have it shipped over in a BB box and then . . . would it fit? I'm sure I can find a mechanic to put it together and the main pain of these "surplus cars" is the ugly dash where nothing works and the signal on the right. I have a feeling if I replaced those two things, got rid of the Rusco sticker, and gave it a paint job then it would be a nice little Honda.
