PCs and Monitors are normally dual voltage and rated 50/60Hz...I would bet that issue was a voltage one; so many places have way too many houses tapped of a single transformer and very long/undersized services. Plus the lack of a properly grounded system plays hell with electronics. Shawn
So, probably having something that both locals and foreigners would be interested in would have to balance out. I think probably logistics and bringing something in without it being too expensive or not being worth buying after putting enough markup to cover the costs of bringing it in would be another challenge. One way around that which I've witnessed limited success, is to break even on certain items, especially ones that are fairly expensive to begin with, and bring in popular items that you can enjoy a higher retail markup on due to discounted or bulk pricing. But it's a gamble as to what would be popular enough to bring in the revenue needed to justify eating profit on the specialty goods. Good location, and finding what would motivate people enough to come to you to buy what you have. A lot of challenges, because the business would have to be owned and run by your Filipina/Filipino spouse or significant other. You would have to act as an advisor and perhaps there are limits to being able to use what connections you have to obtain such merchandise? A lot of "ifs". Just look at the largest and most successful businesses in Dumaguete. None of them cater to expats in the slightest bit. Low quality - low price is what keeps you in business and makes money in the Philippines. A very high percentage of expats want high quality at Filipino price and arrogantly b*tch and moan if they don't get it. I'd just rather not have them as customers.
Hence why everything in the West is 99% "Made in China" nowadays... And then they complain that local jobs go to Asia...
Alot of stuff is made in china as they are good at doing there thing,but most which goes to the western world is made under licence to a good standard unlike the crap they send here.
Exactly, I have friends who source their products specially made for their Businesses back in Oz from Companies in Taiwan and China, they can made world class items if needed, but mostly they are called upon to produce cheap rubbish by the West, so they deliver...
Most of the stuff I bought in the US that was made in China was of good quality. It's only when you go and buy the cheap clothing and off brand goods at Walmart do you notice the lower quality...you are getting exactly what you are paying for. American workers doing monkey work and expecting the salaries of skilled workers and unions overstepping is the reason companies are moving factories out of the US or automating their factory lines.
