I've just moved from Masaplod Sur to Cangmintang (Sibulan). Does anyone know of a GP or Doctor in the area? One in private practice, male or female...

A General Practitioner (GP) is a doctor who knows a little about a lot as opposed to a Specialist (or Consultant) who knows a lot about a little. If the doctor is bad then he/she knows very little about very little... and you die.

Hope my earlier comment was not too flippant; if so, then my apologies.

Although not private, I have been very happy with Dr Virginia Tinagan at the Provincial. I am reasonably aware of medical matters and know if someone knows their stuff; she is always very good and has an extremely pleasant manner. It is a fact of non-private treatment that often other people are in the same room whilst you are having your consultation, so it would be no good if it was a very private matter.

Best of luck with your treatment.

GPs often develop specialisms too - referring here to Western models mainly. For instance in a Group Practice, partners may develop specialisms in diabetes, asthma, whatever. Some GPs spend time attached to local hospitals in respective specialisms. For instance my vasectomy was performed by a GP specialising in minor surgery. It might just be that GPs here will do the same - I mean specialise in chosen fields, not necessarily do your snip! Thus a larger group practice will send patients with particular problems to their in house specialist. Efficient and saves time, money and is a good way of limiting waiting lists for Consultants in the hospitals. Obviously there is a limit and GPs will refer or recommend onwards - but one should be able to get a good standard of care.

Not to put the worries on here, and this is the Philippines after all, but I'm wary of one man band practices. I'm sure there are no Harold Shipmans over here, but....
