Yes, but don't you pay for a service level, like 20A or 50A or 100A? Isn't there some obligation on the provider to meet that commitment or is it best effort?

 

Even when having a 50A circuit breaker in your house you will never use that load. You can calculate all appliances together and add 20% to it and you will get the maximum load for your home. The average load is much lower because you never use all of your appliances at once. The electric power provider calculate in a similar way. They think also that not all houses are using their appliances at once. Now there are build more houses or the house owners are starting to upgrade their homes with high power appliances. Then suddenly the average load is above the average load considered for the transformer. This means that it can no longer provide enough power if the load is rising high. Result is a drop in the voltage.

 

Who should be on the hook to fix something like that?

 

The consumer is unfortunately responsible; hence, a transformer may be required.

PatO told the solution. But for the customer it is quite difficult to find out, if it is really a transformer issue or if the issue is somewhere else.

 

I guess I don't understand why the distributor isn't on the hook for infrastructure that they own. If you had cable TV and the picture was pixelating due to poor single strength from the drop owned by the cable company, would you go and buy a new drop for the cable company so that you get a good picture? It's not a perfect analogy, but it's pretty close. Why is power looked at differently than other service providers like cable?

 

There is another issue uprising: what is if you buy a transformer and the electric company starts to connect other houses to it without giving money back to you. You pay and other gets free connection? Looks quite unfair for the buyer.

 

If you say NO, I suspect there is as much likelihood of them doing that as there is of connecting people to your meter. You own that transformer and they know it. But if you allow it, of course they will.

 

Not sure Noreco can do that, it's your private property if they did one should have a payment.
