I spent my late teen and early adulthood trying to stay away from there. Not sure I would like to travel there. This would not be true of the other expats' nationalities here. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
What is wrong with Vietnam? I worked there for a short time. No issues except nearly no public transport available inside smaller cities. Quite an issue when the company disallow driving anything on your own.
That's a pretty confusing statement. Assuming that "stay away from there" means draft dodging due to disagreement with the war or political ideology why exactly would you have a problem with Vietnam today.....that isn't at war with the US. Or do you feel a bit guilty about dodging the draft and visiting the country would remind you of that?
No, it was just a bad place to be; too many friends coming home in coffins or addicted to hard drugs. Some turned out ok. My preference was to stay in school to get an engineering degree; if staying in school in the late 60's meets your definition of draft dodging then so be it. Real draft dodgers went to Canada or elsewhere, burnt their draft cards, gave fraudulent information at physicals etc.. I did avoid Vietnam by staying in school and getting full time credits but that was more to earn a degree than anything else. Anybody whose only motive would have to avoid the draft could have done so by taking some easy, useless liberal arts curriculum. Should people be able to choose their wars? Yeah. Many had one prerequisite, that we play to win. Vietnam was not like that. I guess the public wouldn't allow it. As for you I guess I have to wonder, where do you derive such righteous authority to conclude people are so imperfect with almost no information about them? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
You said you spent most of your time trying to stay away from there, without a mention of going to school. So I just assumed that you were draft dodging. But I didn't say dodging the draft was good or bad. I said: I didn't say it was right or wrong. Like most things in life it is not a black or white issue. There are many shades of grey there. They do when they vote. Sometimes you don't get what you want in a democracy. If a person doesn't like playing for the team because of the coach(es) the majority voted for they are completely free to leave said team. (And stop collecting the benefits that being on the team offers......example: hand in that passport.) So no, I don't believe people get to choose to participate or not in a war when there is a draft. However, legal draft dodging as you did is fair game. The team has a set of established rules. You played by those rules. I don't see that as a bad thing.
what about changing your religion from Christian to Muslim for draft dodging. A famous boxer comes to mind!
I don't understand the rule. Why would joining the most violent religion today prevent someone from being drafted. If anything I think it should increase their chances. They could be really useful in jobs that work with explosives.
