The Lightning Arrestor has caught my attention because I believe it was Lightning via my Fil-Products Cable that took out my i7 Laptop/ Modem and Pay TV Box. I had unplugged the TV after watching it (TV Box on the same plug) and went to bed leaving the Laptop on while downloading. The first clap of Thunder hit at 1am and was the loudest thing I have ever heard in my life! It resonated for more than a minute later, you could hear it rolling away in the distance! I got up straight away and I am 99% sure I had unplugged the Laptop at the same time as I unplugged the Fridge and Freezer. The Laptop was on when I did that as I checked the downloads. When I woke up it (Laptop) was dead, as was the Modem and Pay TV Box. Now the Modem was unplugged, no doubt about that at all, as was the TV & TV Box. The TV was undamaged as was the Fridge and Freezer. So my thinking is; the only cable connected to the Laptop/ Modem and TV Box at the time was the Fil-Products ADSL/Cable. So I am adamant it was a Lightning strike by way of the Fil-Products Cable, but no way would they accept that theory.

I would tend to agree that it was probably lightning on your cable/internet. You would figure they have lightning arrestors somewhere in their system...but can't say as I've not really paid too much attention to how they run their cable/internet.

Your posts do have me motivated to look into finding a lightning arrestor for our internet connection.

It has certainly motivated me to make sure at the slightest rumble of Thunder or a flicker of light in the sky I race out and make sure I unplug everything now regardless of the UPS/AVR Boxes. Worried though if I should go as far as unplugging the LAN Cable that runs from the Modem to the PC, as well as the Cable that runs from the Pay TV Box to the TV as I am worried about the 'Cable' despite now unplugging the TV and PC every time from power when they are not in use. Reason is; the Laptop was still connected via the LAN Cable when it fritzed out on me and that is where I believe the spike came in from.
