I wonder what the Negros NPA are thinking these days since Duterte declared them terrorist. I know many mountain people and I am sure that they must be or know and/or support the NPA in principle. I never thought of the Negros NPA as being violent or threatening here. On back hill bike rides I have always been met with children smiling and waving.

I am not a communist nor would I want to live under communism but I am not a poor Filipino who lives in poverty while the elitist plunder the bounty for themselves. I suppose in theory all they want is a better life and a share of the bounty. But since the bounty in the Philippines is held by a few elite familias.. the average Negrosian has no beef with them. I know one thing. Aggression breeds aggression. Anyone have friends or family that would know what think? I hate for them to be persecuted because of a different philosophy.

    Thoughts?

That's exactly what the NPA has proposed.

Most do not think they are communist. Do you give to the wife's family because they have nothing and you have lots? THAT is the communist doctrine:
"From each according to his ability, to each according to his needs" is a slogan popularized by Karl Marx

The big differentiator between your two examples is one is by choice and one isn't.

Such is life. It's nice to believe in that "everyone is created equal" and "dreams can come true" nonsense.....but it is just that, nonsense. Some people will just never amount to anything, no matter how badly they want or how hard they try.

Should society take care of those that can't take care of themselves through no fault of their own? I think most of the world thinks so. But then there is that "through no fault of their own" part; some people are quite capable of taking care of themselves but would rather get handouts than work to sustain themselves. And does socialism/communism encourage and breed these types of people?

When you have the top 2 percent of earners paying 70% of the tax burden and the bottom 50% paying basically no taxes (in the US), then those that are looking for handouts (bottom 50% of the country) have absolutely no stake in the game and could care less if it all burns down.

I'm not for communism, but did want to talk about your second point.

I think it's a little shortsighted to think that everyone wants to sit on their butts all day and let the rich pay for everything. I'd say a big part of the issue is there just isn't enough opportunity to support everyone working at decent pay. The Philippines is a perfect example of that. Way more people than the economy can support.

I have a good friend who owns some section 8 housing and his tenants are primarily single woman with a couple of kids. They are on public assistance and also getting disability payments for he kids who have ADD. People can make more money doing nothing, so why not kick back. The system is broken.

I'll thought I would add a little color to the numbers you threw out.

45% of Americans pay no federal income tax

With respect to the 45% paying no taxes. Everyone pays taxes, not everyone pays income taxes, but everyone pays taxes on almost everything they buy or consume. Those taxes go to the government. In addition, taxes are baked in to product costs in the form of tariffs, so there is another instance where they pay. The other misleading part of throwing that number out is that a significant number of those are retirees. They have to stop working at some time, don't they?

    taxpayers_by_age.png

With respect to the "rich" paying for everything. They certainly pay more $$, but what I found interesting is that they don't necessarily pay a higher percent. It it harder for me to come up with 25% for them to come up with 25%. Who should we feel more sorry for? I know you don't feel sorry for anyone, and I'm not asking your for you feel sorry for me either, just asking you to think.

    The images are from:
Who doesn’t pay taxes, in eight charts

I just find it curious that it's easier to sympathize with people that have more money than they know what to do with it, than people who barely survive from one day to the next. Do you really believe people chose to struggle from day to day?

I don't sympathize with the extremely rich but if we want to say that everybody should be treated equally then there should be a flat tax across the board. I don't see tax revenue as the main problem in the US, that would be government spending IMO.

I never said people choose to struggle, quite the opposite, I said some people have no choice but to struggle. That's what I meant when I said not all people are created equally. Should I, our anyone else, have to shoulder that burden? I say yes, in certain circumstances; those that struggle through no fault of their own, and I'll add those that may be down on their luck but would otherwise, or normally, be contributing members of society. What I suggest is not so black and white, how the government identifies these people is a challenge, and quite likely, impossible to do. Not going to pretend to have the answers. Just my 2 cents. I'm sure if I ever lost my job and ended up in the street somehow my opinions would change. We are all victims of our circumstances.

How this applies to the NPA and their fight against the oligarchy..... I'm sure some people have written a books about it. I'm not familiar enough with the socioeconomic situation in the Philippines to write on such a topic.

Nationalism leads to some extremely dangerous behavior. Nationalism is an extremist version of patriotism. Semantics perhaps.
