Hi guys! Does anyone have a decent length drain snake they would be willing to sell or rent out? We have a blocked shower drain that isn't responding to the usual caustic soda remedy and the feeble example I found at Citi Hardware was neither long enough nor tough enough! Appreciate any suggestions or solutions! Cheers - Barry

Forget this stuff. It is most time utterly crap and does not work at all. Stuff that is strong enough to dissolve the obstruction will also destroy the drain pipe. Better to use a drain snake.

Is there a plumbing company around which owns a professional drain snake?

I have found that a surge of hot water can sometimes clear a blockage ... but that is best if a bath so that the volume is large enough .... not sure if it would work for a shower.

I thought my drain was just plugged, but after several attempts of trying Drano, etc, finally called our plumber...I found that my septic tank was full and had to have the pumper truck come and empty it. You get one free pump-out per year, but it only costs around 1000php, from my recollection, if you need more.

It is probably a build up of hair in the drain. Long hair is usually the culprit. There is a tool sold in US that is very simple, it is a piece of flat plastic about 16 inches long X 1/2" wide X 1/8" thick with notches on each side with plastic barbs sticking out. When inserted into the drain the barbs will snag some hair which can be removed easily.
Once you finally get it cleaned out install a hair drain which has many small holes and installed over the existing drain. Also make sure all long haired persons showering do not let the hair go down the drain.

I have one of these type that I recently used in my shower drain at home as my Filipino Daughter's hair is forever going down the drain, somehow. Here is a pic of what I was able to pull out with it....it is amazing how much hair these ladies have and lose!!

Thank you for that p0st. My wife is getting older and a little gray and she is constantly complaining to me that her hair is "dropping" and it never used to. She expects me to do something about this as she is my wife and all of the hundreds of filipinas she has talked to personally and in facebook have offered no solution. She does not believe me when I tell her it is natural to shed some hair and then new hair comes in. She insists that she never lost hair when she was younger. I will show her your post and maybe she will believe that her hair "dropping" is something that she just never noticed and not a new thing from her aging.

Sorry to reply a second time but I showed your post and pic to my wife and told her that her dropping hair is normal. She still does not believe me because she said you did not say that it is normal. She read your post two or three times and said "where she say it is normal?" Life with my lovely filipina is still a thrill a minute. Thanks anyway.

It is NORMAL to lose up to 100 strands of hair a day, and I would imagine as we age we might NORMALLY lose more, as thinning hair goes with the aging process. (Hope this helps!)
