    GUINOBATAN, Albay — The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) raised Mayon Volcano’s alert status to Alert Level 3 – which means it has an increased tendency towards eruption – at 8 p.m. Sunday, less than 24 hours after Alert Level 2 (increasing unrest) was raised here.

    Ed Laguerta, Phivolcs Bicol chief, said that they were still unable to determine the distance of the lava flow because of the clouds. But the brighter crater glow is an indication of lava.

    “The brighter glow of the crater is an indication of the initiation of lava flow on the southern slope of the volcano,” Laguerta told Inquirer. “We cannot determine the distance yet because of the thick clouds.

    I was there in 2014 when it was doing this last time. I think I remember some people dying because they decided to ignore the warnings and go mountain climbing.

    Yup a mountain guide and 4 tourists died there. Also happened on mt canlaon in negros oriental.

    The Philippines raised the alert level at its most active volcano, Mount Mayon, on Monday after fresh activity.

    Mayon has been spewing lava and a cloud of ash since 13 January, forcing more than 40,000 residents to flee their homes in the central province of Albay.

    Authorities raised the alert level to four on a scale of five because a hazardous and violent eruption is expected within days.

    An 8km (five mile) exclusion zone has been put in place.

    If it had been a scientific expedition they probably would have had enough sense to not be there. And of course they probably would not have taken tourists. It's too bad they died but that kind of stuff really pisses me off, like the idiots that want to go ski in forbidden areas, live with grizzly bears, or go to Afghanistan or N. Korea to sight see, and then when the sh*t hits the fan we taxpayers get to foot the bill for the rescue and evac or whatever. Sorry for the caustic comments but it just ticks me off. Of course what ticks me off is a very long list. Most Dr's, all lawyers, insurance companies, politicians, stupid people, arrogant people, inconsiderate people, crudeness, others that know what is best for me......................... oh, sorry. I'll stop now. (off topic)

    It was at alert level 4 for a couple days. (Alert level 5 is "sh*t is exploding right now!") Why are 56k people just now evacuating?
