I read an article about the top places in the world to retire in Forbes magazine. (Im guessing most of you have read/heard about this) I think Dumaguete was number 4 or 5 on the list which is one of the reasons why I chose to visit here. For those of you that have been here awhile, have you really noticed any increase in population of visitors/retirees or any increase in pricing/rates from this article written? I would think since I believe the magazine has worldwide distribution and many readers it may lead to a fluxuation+increase in visitors and distrupt the economy in some way (maybe for the better or worse, I really don't know) and am trying to get a feel for how it has affected the city in terms of long term retirement costs vs other areas of the philippines. Thx in advance.

Prices have gone up....but I'm not sure it has much to do with that article. Since Duterte has taken office the peso has struggled. Many have thought that was a good thing but that is before they realized that a weak peso leads to higher inflation rates. You get more pesos with the exchange rate....but you also pay more pesos to buy things.

I saw that article and dismissed it as a fake. It failed to mention the great cities of the world like; Vancouver, Toronto, Montreal, Thunder Bay.

If memory servers that was not the only article about Dumaguete, but you're right there has been a significant increase in tourists/visitors. Some people are so gullible they accept these articles as gospel, when often they are inaccurate.

I don't know why because Dumaguete is going downhill. substancially increased traffic, bad air, more intolerance. I've noticed they are honking their horns more and longer, not for signaling but because someone cut them off or did something wrong. Not as gentle as it was a few years ago.

Prices are up. And did you notice, I am guessing here, but I think they reduced the peso payout against the dollar over xmas month in order to boost their profits. One of the changers here does this during xmas. When I noticed he was one peso off the usual rate, I was told this was the xmas rate! xmas for HIM that is.

The pay rates expected here have gone up quite a lot. The economy is on fire and jobs are plentiful.

I have been here several years but I am told it was much better 10-15 years ago.

The Wife and her Family are all complaining about the rise in the cost of living here in the recent weeks comparing the rises in the cost of vegetables and meat etc. Even their beloved Fish has gone through the roof in price! I take it on the chin, but I can afford to, BUT IF I was living on their income, I would probably be shouting about it from atop the nearest Coconut Tree! :shifty:

I might be wrong in my initial thoughts on the matter, but I remember telling the Wife when the latest President was elected and started promising so much, that someone was going to pay for it, and seeing as the rich control so much here, it would be the poor who would be paying. She and her family told me; "No way we don't have money to pay!" Now they are muttering two certain President's names around here as the downfall of the Philippines and the suffering of it's peoples... Welcome to the world of Politics...

I've been here approx 6 years. I've seen a big increase in late model cars, pickups and large SUV's - mostly driven by locals. So, maybe it's been a big increase in families that benefit from OFW's here? Not sure - just guessing the reasons for it.
As far as the Forbes article, I doubt it had any impact. Most of the readers/subcribers are upper middle/rich types from the West. You won't see them here. Also, I have not noticed any increase in white Western visitors here, compaired to several years ago.
But, yeah, I did notice an increase in prices, especially food.

First came here in 2002 big difference compared to now, especially the congestion traffic and prices. there was a white tourist in those days and crime was worse.

I think the reason those places were not mentioned is because it is expensive to live there. One of the main requirements to be ranked high as a good retirement location is the cost of living.

I saw that post and I thought he was being facetious. I marked it "funny". I hope the poster is not a Canuck and I offended him. If so, I apologize.
