If local laws fail to impart wisdom, here is guideline from ancient times that bears timeless truth across nations and cultures:

"Whoever commits adultery with a woman has no sense...
Enraged Filipino Husband Hacking A Foreigner.jpg
... because jealousy arouses a husband's fury. The husband will show no mercy when he takes revenge. No amount of money will change his mind. The largest bribe will not satisfy him." Proverbs 6:32-35 GOD'S WORD® Translation

As an example, here is a local occurence in 2010: Briton, 28, killed in Philippines by jealous boyfriend of woman he intended to marry | Daily Mail Online

So, in Philippines, yes, it is best to court and/or date only a Filipina singleton, and never a legally-married, a common-law married, an engaged, or a betrothed woman, to keep one's good health.

Heh, heh... history (The Death of Magellan painting) has nothing to do with the spiritual guideline.

Obviously, the painting simply illustrates and drives home the dark prospect of being hacked or stabbed to death by an enraged and vengeful Pinoy, as what happened to the Briton in 2010. Most locals keep traditional blades at home for kitchen or security use.

I don't think "jealousy" is pertinent to this particular issue anyway. If the husband abandoned wife and kids a long time ago and is with one (or several) new fools as his girlfriends, I hardly think he could credibly be jealous of the wife. It's greed and retribution that would be the drivers of his legal complaint.

I used to think the same way and I was sure that most of my friends and fellow members on this forum would likewise not take the chance. In fact few expats admit that their wife/live in is already married. Perhaps they don't know because I was astounded when my gf let me in on some gossip where she was chatting with a lot of my friend's partners and found many of them were still married to Filipinos. In some cases the Filipinos did not like this arrangement and raised a fuss with "their wife" but I doubt VERY much those ladies told their expat partners about it. They tell their filipina friends and don't expect it will be repeated. I will not mention any names but I sure hope you guys doing this know what you are doing.

EDIT: Think about it. If a filipina is still single after age 30 she is considered an "Old Maid" so if you want to go out with someone who is 30 or older, what is the chance that she is really single? Keeping in mind that there is no divorce here your chances are pretty slim. The trick is getting her to admit it. At least one filipina I know committed bigamy and got away with it for years before it caught up to her. Be careful gentlemen.

    Either fish or cut bait.

That is, pay for her annulment, or pound sand.

Yes, I have known guys who lived in the Philippines with married women - AND got away with it. I have also known guys who lived with married women, and the Filipino husband found out about it. Not so good afterward.

It's about laws, culture and values... are you seeking guidelines out law?

My son turns 4 this year and his mom is married to a Filipino. Good news is I'm still alive, her husband, who abandoned her years before we met has new girl and kids as well and doesn't care much about their common child, is cooperative, and didn't even try to use any leverage he might have.

She told me about that before I even set foot in the Philippines because she correctly sensed that doing it at any later time would kill all trust.

Forget about annulments, just wait for divorce law to be introduced, it will be quicker. We try to get the annulment done since before our son was born. Changed lawyers in between, recently withdrew the case coz the assigned judge was known to deny 90% of the cases he works. Refiling will take place half year later, better luck next time. Cost so far 160k including psychological attest, estimated to be > 400k when, if ever, finished (lawyer in Makati...).

Biggest problem resulting from the existing marriage is that my son is technically her husband's son, and thus still has no German passport. Getting that corrected is a different case that's also ongoing. According to the lawyers the risk of me or her being jailed even if our son is officially declared to be not the son of her husband (and thus can be assumed my son) by a Filipino court is still zero.

The whole process is ridiculous, as is the stupid situation of not allowing people proper divorce in the first place. Hopefully they finally work that out and manage to break free from the yoke of catholic church that the Spaniards introduced.
