Rude foreigners in Dumaguete

    So we’re sitting in the LBC store in Robinsons Mall waiting to get served. We filled out a little form and got a number. Yes, in the Philippines there are still places that you “take a number.” Turns out our number was to be the last one called before the employees took their lunch hour. LBC must be rare because a lunch hour is almost never an hour in the Philippines.

    Several people walked in afterwards and were politely informed that there would be no more service until after lunch. Then an elderly (defined as older than me) foreigner walked in, was politely informed of the upcoming lunch break. He got pissed off, yelled, threw out an F-bomb and stormed off. There was no reason for the tantrum. He was treated politely and told he could come back after the break.

    This is behavior that Janet and I witness pretty regularly in Dumaguete and most of the time the offender is a foreigner.

    Yes it's very disappointing to witness these rude foreigners.

    I admit I have been guilty of losing my temper especially in the early years of adjusting to the way thing's get done or should I say don't get done here! But I never dropped the f bomb on the staff. They are only following policy and are under paid to boot which makes it doubly annoying to see these idiots shouting and swearing. Gives us all a bad name.

    Yes, some things are very frustrating here. I was at Fil Products, I think it is called, to ask about cable. Some man, English speaker but not polite so impossible he was American, was berating the staff about having to go back and get something or some requirement they had. He said they were too cheap to buy a printer, which they actually had, so that he could email what they needed and then they could print it. He was not cursing too badly, but he was loud and abusive. After he left I laughed and the staff laughed too and I told them to give him a fuzzy signal.
    My question is this. If the culprit is sober would it be grossly inappropriate to tell them that their behavior is unpleasant and they need to settle down? I have done this many times in the states but since I have retired I have mellowed. I never do it in a mean way but I do calmly comment directly to the culprit and tell them that they are being rude and they need to stop because they are disturbing my day. I've rarely ever had anyone come back at me with a threat. Some just leave, some apologize, but so far there have been very few really belligerent ones. Even they are always just bluff. I don't think an explanation of "we are guests" or anything else is necessary. Rude people don't care and can't reason that way. Just, "You are being rude and you need to settle down. You are disturbing my peace", is sufficient. I will admit that I got loud once at Globe,but I did not get personal, curse, or belittle anyone, and I think Globe offices would have to be excepted territory from speaking to abusive people anyway. So, seriously, should we consider calling down these rude foreigners at times? Would it help the rep for foreigners?

    Both sides have to give on this because nobody has permission to screw up your day by taking hours instead of minutes to perform simple tasks.
    I don’t have such permission to mess up foreigners’ lives when back in the USA. We all gave our hosts and our guests, depending on where we are from. In this case, there is no reason at all not to stagger the lunch hours for employees to provide good service, here or in America.

    I agree that how some things are done here are quite frustrating for a western thinking person; I figured out pretty early on that other than visa extensions there are not many reasons for me to deal with the places that make no sense (LTO and that place in Bais we have to deal with when we harvest sugarcane for example). I let the wife handle basically everything, perhaps it doesn't sound fair but she has grown up here and I have enough excuses with things around the house to take care when I'm home that I get to avoid most of the headaches.

    It's how they do it in the Philippines. Apparently they do have permission to do things at there own pace. Most places do stagger their lunches, those that don't have a reason....which is they owner doesn't want to or maybe because they don't have enough employees to cover down on lunches.

    Back to the origional post on this issue about lbc and lunch,its always busy in the office in there and why only have one person behing the counter at all times?

    We have to live with it of course. My point about “permission” is that people should not always hide behind a facade of “culture” to excuse being rude to the country’s guests. They do it, of course, and to live here one had better accept it because workers suffer no consequences either way.

    On the other hand, many times back home in North Carolina I got to see many foreigners experience even worse inefficiencies with our DMV; any rudeness they can give us will be experienced by them 10x when they or their relatives attempt to get a driver’s license in my state!Anything they can do we can do worse.

    I can count on one hand the number of times an employee has been rude to me at a business in the Philippines. I don't buy it. Working at the pace that work gets done at in the Philippines is not being rude.

    The sense of entitlement and self importance in the US is #SAD.

    The DMV employees deal with all sorts of idiotic problems that a lot of the customer got themselves into by driving like retards. Then they come in there without knowing what they need to fix the problem (which could be figured out by a simple Google search) or having any of the forms or requirements already completed (because they are retards). Then they get pissed at the employees because they didn't do there own due diligence and because they feel the government should fix all their problems for them.

    The last time I was in the DMV (for my TSA pre check appointment) I sat in the front row and got to hear about 10 counters worth of problems. I'm amazed most of those people were able to live as long as they had. So don't be mad at the DMV, be mad at the idiots bringing their idiotic problems to the counter.

    Because it costs money to have another employee and it costs the company nothing for you to wait. You can be sure that it is not done out of ignorance of efficiency. It is done for maximum ROI, which is the basis for your waiting and inconvenience in all cases for services and products here. If you don't want to wait, use an alternative service. But wait, I don't know of one, not one as easy to use anyway. All the things like better service means more profit, (it doesn't when there is no competition), and it's the right thing to do; all those might as well be put in a bottle and thrown in the ocean. It is all about the money. Of course that applies to many companies in America too.
