Thought I should introduce my self having posted already on the forum. My name is Mike or OzeMike also have a nickname from my hash house harrier days of FMD (F*** Me Dead)! 71 years young and in my third and hopefully last relationship with a lovely girl from Canlaon City. Born in Hampshire in England moved to Brisbane in Oz in 1984 Began my love affair(?) with the Phils in 2000. Two failed marriages and poorer but not necessarily wiser for it later still love it here and have moved from Cebu City to live in Dumagute been here one month so far. Love golf (20hcp), walking, exploring, driving, reading, fishing Retired here now for the last hurrah! Cheers
Hello and welcome, Mike! Hope you enjoy retirement in small town Dumaguete where natives are calm, civil, considerate, courteous, friendly, good-natured, helpful, mild, possess a Christian personal sense of honor, and generally speak good English as a second language. Dumaguete is loveable but it is as imperfect as any place... Beware of migrant elements from north and south of the achipelago, subsumed among Dumagueteños, who are generally contemptuous of or defensive against "Ingleseros" or speakers of English as second language, for they tend to be exploitative, less polite, covert, and can be harsh to the point of violence.
Welcome aboard, I hailed from Ipswich (behind Brisbane) lived there from 1980 to 2014 when I moved here, my 3rd (time lucky) marriage also for me, learnt from past mistakes, and LOVING my life now! I hope Dumaguete brings you the happiness you seek. It is what you make of it... Make sure you get out and look around beyond the City limits, you will find a very peaceful atmosphere beyond the hustle and bustle of the big City.
Thanks Mom Miriam for the welcome -appreciated! Plus the heads up re migrant elements all new to me and so far have been very impressed by the helpful and friendly locals.
Cheers Brian know Ipswich well. Sounds like we have a fair bit in common lol. Hope we can catch up some time over a coldie for a chat. We are currently in Talay til March 10th then move in a small apartment in Bgry Batanyan in the city very close to the sea front, for a year to build up cash reserves for emergencies. Yes plan to get out and about a lot as seems a lot of nice places here to visit. Currently trying to decide between Fil Products and Skycable for our tv and internet needs. Someone told me Setanta sports channel (covers Aussie NRL matches) is only available on Skycable? But Fil Products has Solar Sports which show the PGA golf tournaments (I believe). Mike ps your not Broncos fan by any chance?
Ball Sports? KACK! Sorry mate if it doesn't have wheels under it then I have no idea what type of Sport that is! hehe I spent 12 years on the Sunshine Coast working in Custom Body Shops after School, then 34 years in Ipswich Lapping, Street Racing, working on Cars, building Customs, Street Machines and Hotrods for others working in various Shops as well as from home for a whiles. If it did not revolve around Cars or Bikes then I was not there! I have Fil-Products. You will most likely need to be close to the highway where they run their cables to be connected. I am around 150M from the Highway and it took some convincing to get them to hook me up. I never watch the Sports Channel though as I doubt any Car Racing would be broadcast on those here so watch the other channels like History etc that cover Car Shows or Home Renovations Shows etc. I prefer to download Movies to watch using the Fil-Products ADSL as the Fil-Products Movies annoy me with their Chinese Subtitles, whereas I download the Subs with the Movie if available and then watch on the Flat-screen TV here. Their ADSL is quiet good for the most, although during Peak periods it does drop out a lot, of drops to a Snail's pace, but I normally hit up the downloads once every few months and can get around 30+ Movies overnight if needed, thankfully there are no Caps or throttling involved with Fil-Products ADSL, as they state; "Sky is the Limit!"
Good info on Fil Products mate thanks must call into their office and get the current bundled packages etc and talk about when they can install. Can only find a Chanel list on Fil Products Tacloban but imagine they'd be the same Very interesting about your racing and hot car mechanic work - a lot of knowledge there mate. Loved Jags last car in Oz was a 2003 S-type 4.2L V8 Got to go eat dinner as getting dirty looks haha Cheers and talk again Mike
I sold my V12 Jag I was going to use on a Hotrod project (a 1947 Singer Roadster Pickup) before I left Oz, had more rust than metal due to the vinyl roof on it. A friend has 2x early Jags, 1947 & 1948 models, a 1959 model (wreck) and 2x 1968 Jags, one I think a 420G model? It has factory Triple SU's on it and many Luxury extras as standard, fit for a Queen! lol With Fil-Products, I pay (approx $55AUD) 2200php per month for the 6Mbps ADSL and (approx. $10AUD) 400php per month for the TV package. I think that is amazing value for the TV Package compared to the $136 per month I use to pay on my Optus Pay TV package back in Australia in 2014! Also the 6Mbps ADSL here I feel is very comparable in speed to the 20Mbps Fiber-Optic Optus connection I had back in Oz for (approx. 6000php) $150AUD per month, even if it is not always so reliable and on demand like back in Oz, but it is what it is here and you either accept what is or go without, no use complaining! I waited 2 1/2 years just to get a connection here as no one had Cables laid out, and WiFi is absolutely useless here in Maluay! IF you ever come across a link for a TV Programming Guide for Fil-Products please share as I would love to know what Car Shows and Movies are coming up in advance. That is the one thing that does irk me as it is hit and miss with catching Shows, and I don't bother with the Movies anymore because each time I change station it is halfway through with no idea what the next movie will be. IF they had a programming guide it would be a big help, but even scrolling through the channels they do not list the name of the current show playing at that time. That and the Chinese Subtitles are my only peeves...
Cheers Brian missed this reply from you somehow - many thanks for pricing and info on Fil Products very helpful as need to make a decision in the next two days on which one to use as it will be in Bantayan so can get most of them there. Is the Australia Plus channel active? Also Solar Sports? The Chinese subtitles sound really off putting but I guess you tune them out eventually? Not knowing what movie it is or having a program guide is not uncommon in the Philippines or is only some channels listed on sites like Click The City agree it's a bummer! Some great old Jags listed mate the V12 was a big engine must have had a nice throttle note!
