Allot of ex pats like myself are retired without allot to do and we often end up drinking to much and this includes me. Back home in Canada there were lots of places where I could volunteer but here in Dumaguete it seems hard to find a place where I could fit in. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

    Thanks

    I don't know.
I'm sure I can help you out with this? come to my house and dig my garden while I'm at the bar, I could feel good about that knowing I was helping you out.

Seriously I had the same problem when I lived in Mactan and got embroiled in the Bar culture there, having recently moved to Valencia and living in a house that has more space plus a large garden area, I am intending to get back to a couple of former Hobbies of mine, the first being Carpentry which goes hand in glove with the second, the keeping of Racing Pigeons, a shed needs to be built, nest boxes, and carry cases to take them away for release.
If you have no knowledge of this hobby check out the many You Tube videos on the subject especially the ones in Manila which is the hot bed of the racing scene here, there is even new cars to won in the races, but it is a bit like the lottery, there could be 10,000 birds in the race?
If you have children in the family which I have, it is a great hobby for them, gets them away from FB and computers, teaches them animal husbandry and responsibility, they are fairly easy to care for, easy to reproduce and cheap to feed, they eat anything a chicken will eat. A small pen with a roof is all they need, they will even fly to a hole in the wall. When I raced them in UK our big race was from Rennes in France and I have had them home on the day having been released at 6am and get home at 9pm that was 557mls.
As far as I know there is no club for them in the south but think there may be one in Bacolod, hope this sparks an interest for others here? my times with the pigeons was the best fun I ever had with my clothes on, haha
George Foreman, Mike Tyson Frank Sinatra, Britney Spears, Mell C, the queen of England all had or still has them, even Noah had a pair.

I am sure you mean well but hobbies are not what I am interested in. I want to know where I can help a charity. I like giving back to the community.

I seen there are Red Cross office in Dumaguete. I know how it works in Europe, not that much about how it's managed here. I meet some who volunteered in Bohol after the earthquake in october 2013 and in Leyte after thypoon hit there. Many kids and families need help of all kind, I know some foreigner try to help out as private persons, maybe you can try contact some of them and see if you can do something to help out. I don't know your background, same time I seen many people who are great to kids, with out been educated social workers. Pls., if you find something, lets us know, I'm sure many foreigner here would like to know, if there are a way they can do something to help out

David I know you, as a nice guy, of course I can help you. Sorry I have no skills as a carpenter, but I'm born in a bar, if you buy a bottle of Jack Daniels, I will join you in Valencias red light district behind the market. Last time we meet there, neighbour table was noisy/shouted so we could not hear each other. This time I bring system for communication on bikes, very good headphones and bluetooth, maybe we can hear each other that way, lol

One thing that slows down volunteering in the Phils is that the government categorizes it as work and you can not work on a visitor visa.

I have a decent education and pretty good communication skills. Some experience with computers. I have done allot of volunteering in Canada in halfway houses and food banks. And also with the Big Brother Association in Canada.

This is not really a surprise. Following typhoon Yolanda the government tried to collect import duties on donated relief goods.
Eventually they decided to let the donations pour without taxation, due to bad PR.
