Politicizing the BI should be a concern to all of us. Apparently the BI has walked it back.

 

Absolutey! Just like they shouldn't have backed down when the Chinese took over the Spratleys. But its easier to go after a nun.

 

Exactly. We can disagree with how things are run but as foreigners this is not our country and we have no place trying to become political to voice our opinions. Its illegal as it rightly should be and should be in all countries. A countries politics should be for its own citizens... the rest of us can share our random gripes at your local foreign venting table.

 

I did take a look at the 1987 Constitution that guarantees freedom of speech but it is not worded like the US Constitution at all. Basically it says that one’s free speech should not be a political activity, among other limitations. Westerners like that nun need to realize that such freedom is limited here, totally different than in the West, or in America where “one may disagree vehemently with what you say but will die to preserve your right to say it”. Plain conversation, for example, in an Internet forum, can be CONSTRUED as breaking the law if authorities WISH to make the case that one’s writings involve illegal political activity. The law is the law and this is not America. There are only a handful of countries that have complete freedom of speech in terms of politics, such as the USA, and all countries have limitations, for example, pornography & community standards, “hate” speech (interestingly, a political invention in itself) which actually takes away freedom of thought, inciting speech such as shouting fire in a movie theater. I agree that we must either accept it as it is, or leave. The nun is wrong, very wrong, and should first worry about injustices in her own country.
