And where was the information, that the UK stopped that?
I understand that they still try to give them jobs!?
I tell you what: If you would go in schools in Germany and let the german students try that german tests for B2 - the most will fail!

 

Probably when brexit kicks in and the UK leaves EU we will let more Filipino nurses in, who knows. Hope they do, I know some Filipinos nurses in UK and they are good even better than British.

IELTS and English language requirements for Nurses in the UK

I’m not a nurse but I’ve taken IELTS-Academic myself without a review (lots of tips at youtube) because I wanted to know my proficiency level.
I like the speaking part where you face the interviewer privately unlike TOEIC and probably TOEFL too which are both internet based tests where you find yourself hearing other test takers answering the same stuff. Anyway, the British accent on the IELTS listening test was hard and the handwritten composition using a pencil will make you wish for a computer so you can edit fast. I’m curious, how much time does a native English speaker need to write at least 250 words on a given topic?

 

When my daughter attended school in the Philippines she would come home and tell us stories of her English classes. The teachers who were teaching English were pronouncing and spelling words improperly (not to mention improperly using the words in sentences: "Did you picked up the medicine today?") I told my daughter as long as they didn't expect her to mispronounce or misspell words, to just do what was required for the class. There did come a time that her dad (a native Filipino who had migrated to the U.S. in the 70's) had to make an appointment with one of the teachers when she had missed words on a spelling test that she had actually spelled correctly, but not by Filipino English standards. I think they have a long ways to go in their understanding and use of the English language for use overseas, but they do well enough for their needs there in the Philippines.

 

My concern is not only English standards but also educational standards overall. Science in public schools here seems to be taught without practical experience (understandable due to high cost of equipment), is haphazard and covers very little (probably because the schools often close for long periods of time, the teachers are not always in the classrooms and their own education was poor).

If there is one thing that really needs urgently sorting out, it is the public education system - most of the reforms would not cost much as they are attitudinal and I believe that a good teacher can produce good results for the students even if teaching in a substandard building with substandard provision of books and equipment.
