I have been using "octane booster" in my car as it performs much better with higher octane gasoline than the 95 available in Dumaguete. Then, a couple of weeks back, I found 97 octane in Petron, Talisay, Cebu and I saw some Shell stations in that area with 100 octane. I filled up with the 97 octane and my car runs great without any additive.

So does anyone know where there is a gasoline station in Dumaguete that offers 97 or higher octane gasoline?

Why does the octane need to be so high? The premium (91-93 octane) we have in the states seems to be fine for all vehicles that are sold here.

Things to keep in mind about fuel octane ratings when you gas up

Chevron Philippines product engineering specialist Ronaldo Daguman explains: "A well-maintained automobile only needs fuel with an octane level that meets what is indicated in the owner’s manual. Choosing the best octane rating is like shopping for a t-shirt. If the size medium fits you well, why go for XXL?”

High Octane Fuel Doesn't Always Equal Better Performance or Better Gas Mileage

Are you driving a high performance or highly modified vehicle? It certainly doesn't hurt and I'm not trying to convince you not to put whatever you want into your vehicle, just curious why your vehicle needs that octane level.

Because when it does not get it the engine chugs like its starved of fuel but when it gets it then it purrs like a kitten. Beyond that I neither know nor care about the mechanics of it. However, the fact that they are selling higher octane fuel in Cebu tells me I am not the only one with a car that is thirsty for it.

So, do you know where there is any in Dumaguete? Personally I don't think there is any here so I just use the 95 octane and let it chug chug chug once in a while.

I've only driven a rental car once and a motorcycle rental twice in Dumaguete, so the lowest octane was what I put in. It just easier to get chauffeured around when I'm on vacation.

Says Petron has a 100 octane fuel and it's the best. No idea if it's in Dumaguete, but as there are only 3 stations in the Dumaguete area, it wouldn't take long to figure out.

I wonder if there is something is different from an octane or a car standpoint. Most modern cars are instrumented so well that things like timing, fuel/air mixture can be tuned to work with multiple octanes. Higher octane is generally better, but more expensive. I wonder if they use a different additive in the Philippines that causes more pollution than the fuel sold in the states, but makes getting a higher octane less expensive.

    Keep on truckin.......

I have wondered about that. I agree where you say Petron is best, when you get it from a gas station that has a high fuel turnover so that their supply has not been sitting in the tank since the the last flood. But what I wonder about is whether the "different additive" in the Philippines actually gives a lower octane than what the advertised rating is. After all, there is no truth in advertising here. They can say whatever they want and it would be rare that anyone would test the fuel to see if it meets the octane level they claim.

If the electricity is substandard and low voltage, the internet is bought at 10MB and you get 2MB, or less, the meats and produce in the stores are substandard, any service or product you want to name, public or private, is substandard, there is a chance that the octane rating on the gasoline may not be exactly as advertised. I couldn't really say, just putting it out there for consideration. I like it here but this is the reality when I compare goods and services here to the US, even the way a vehicle runs on the advertised octane rating purchased.

often older vehicles get carboned up inside the cylinders, which rtaises the compression ration. higher octain fuel will burn better in this and many cases.

Funny things happen in the Philippines, I like it here, but you need be ready to accept not all are like you believe. I put fuel on my car, 50 liter thank, and can you imagine they find space for 55 liter, lol. I don't say anything, my last time to visit that gasoline station

Your situation is not the main reason why they sell it in Cebu and not in Dumaguete. It is mainly sold to suckers with too much money who don't need it.

"If your car does not ping on regular, then there is no reason to seek a higher-octane gasoline. The anti-knock level of the regular in this case is adequate for the engine.

But as a car gets older, depending on how the car has been driven and cared for, it may need a higher-octane gasoline anytime between four and six years. That's because carbon deposits inside the cylinders raise the combustion ratio, which in turn raises the engine's octane rating. You may notice that your car operated fine on regular fuel when it was new, but pings on regular as it gets older. So, the higher-octane fuel is not something to pamper a new car with but rather help keep an older car running properly."

You probably won't find any higher octane fuel in Dumaguete as people just don't have the money to buy it. It would be a waste for a gas station to purchase.

Just curious was it at the Petron in Buntis Bacong?
They have figured out how to prevent the pump from starting at zero. I've caught them twice doing that to me.
