Edison indeed is doing a great job and we REALLY enjoy the food (AND easy parking)... If i remember correctly, he spent some time in the food industry in the states...

I have to agree partly as a foodie myself (but you'd never catch me in SF). The best places I've seen in 7 years in Dumaguete I would be hard pressed to rate 3 stars with most being 1 or a generous 2 stars compared to the places I loved in the US.

However one must also consider the cost factor as well. At a small diner with a very good breakfast for one your paying $15 before drinks and that isn't one of the 5 star joints in the US. Here people can't/won't pay 750p for 1 person's breakfast before drinks. If someone by chance did pay that they won't go very often at all. That also creates the problem of certain ingredients that go bad that are only used in higher quality dishes and a restaurant needs to move food to keep loss down so prices can stay at that *low* 750p. Ontop of this many of the ingredients we are used to in other countries aren't available in any decent quality here and really poor quality if you can find it is very overpriced.

Lastly while I know this will ruffle feathers the truth is as well Filipino's as a whole simply have no taste when it comes to food. This is partly due to how they are raised and fed and there taste buds are killed off by massive amounts of vinegar and a few other common things Filipino's can't seem to do without. This blinds there taste buds to many other things that taste good and it takes a lot of work to open the taste buds of just one Filipino. Then to teach them how to hook with herbs and spices they have never heard of before.

Its no surprise across the world and especially in the US which is seen as the foodie country of the world where all different types of food across the world come to be sampled together you won't find a single Filipino 5 star restaurant and likely not even a 4 star. If they claim 4-5 stars they are either lying or their food is definately NOT Filipino.

I should add I find it sick and funny that most of the *better* restaurants in Dumaguete imo have closed up over the last 5 years.
    1. Flamin Grill (good buffalo wings and some interesting burgers until they couldn't find local interest in the burgers)
    2. Forget the name of the Chinese restaurant that wasn't far from Pasta King, 3 star Chinese food imo
    3. Forget the name of the Chinese restaurant next to Hypermart that is now a Bingo hall, 3 star Chinese food.
    4. Coco Amigo's on the Blvd, a few dishes were 3 star imo.
    5. Edel Weiss across from Hypermart was nice steaks and such until the real owner leased it to a scumbag who destroyed it and then later the real owner took it back then rented it to now Pata House.

There were a couple others I can't think of offhand. Some of the better places I like to frequent. It really seems the local community has no taste for good food and would rather fill their bellies with cheap garbage. Hence we are stuck with 2 star and down places.

Trying to cater to Western tastebuds is a bad business plan in the Philippines. Expats say they want food like back home but there are not enough of them willing to dig into their pockets to pay for such luxury on a regular basis. And there is even a further divide between Westerners on what "good" actually is. (Have you ever tried British food? When some fried fish and potatoes are what you're proud of you shouldn't really be complaining about how Filipinos eat.)

I suspect it isn't that they don't like "good food"...it is more about who is paying for that food (my gf did not hesitate for a second when ordering $40-50+ sushi/steaks/lobster/Italian dishes while in Singapore :meh:). When money isn't a factor and exquisite food is available Filipinos are quite capable of developing a sophisticated palate.

Correct, it is a bad business plan to cater to foreigners. Still it does suck when its hard to find decent foreign food even Chinese when it seems like Filipino's should be loving that Chinese food based on what you would think their tastes would be at first. On Fish and Chips though I'll have to disagree though as while its simple there are plenty of semi simple foods that are very good. Just because someone didn't spend hours in the kitchen prepping doesn't mean its not good.

I've had the opposite. Gals your taking out dating its about your spending a lot of money on them. But when it comes to longer term dating it seems most would rather Filipino cheap foods rather then nice foreign food when given an option and it often takes years for them to change tastes to be more open to good foreign food. You give them a choice of where to go as well and they rather go to a Filipino place like Lantaw them get some good food at someplace like Casablanca.

It's good but it shouldn't be the pride and joy of country's cuisine. (Or maybe we are lucky that it is.)

Lucky you. I'd love if I could just throw some balut and chicken necks at my GF. All the long term ones I've had always preferred "foreign" food of higher quality. However, I would never date a girl from the mountain or one who described herself as a "simple" girl and if I find any to be boring/stuck in their ways they get kicked to the curb right quick.

I can only agree with most of the above comments about foods in the Philippines. For sure Filipino taste are different from westerns, maybe ChMacQueen are right Filipino had kills there taste buds with vinegar, soya, sugar etc., only a few dishes fit my taste buds, only I can get on my memory is chopsuey. A perfect meal for me is both tasty and healthy, I'm in no way fanatic, but want tasty and healthy food on daily basis. I can find several decent restaurants and food places in Dumaguete, but not find any high end yet. I can still feel happy and satisfied with the food when I go out, don't forget what you pay for the food compared to the US or Europe. Bertelicious Sushi on south highway opposite side of Katz a few hundred meters against Bacong, great food and staff very friendly, only minus close to the highway. I like the stone oven pizza in Bambolo, paella in Why Not, steak in Casablanca, kebab in a Turkish snack bar on a corner in Nobelfranca street, on the opposite corner of Cafe Mafioso. Moon cafe, Kri, Sans Rival Bistro and some of the beach resorts in Dauin area just to name some of the places I find to have decent food. Taste and what food means to you is very individual, some eat to stay alive, others want high pleasure. I'm not a chief cook but interested in cooking, how to learn to make new dishes, YouTube is great, hate to eat same same. Commodities like seafood and vegetables you can find in good quality and imo very cheap here in the Philippines, just my 2 cents
