Looks like competition coming in made Silliman step up their game. I don't want to be the first to try out this new service though.

When I read the topic title my immediate thought was "You must be dreaming" When a friend died in Silliman 2 years back, his wife had to keep him alive with a manual ventilator all night because they did not have the budget for enough machines. Open heart surgery my left nut!

I guess if I was a local and that was the only choice, then that is fantastic news! For me, if I was a local, I think I would still go to Manila or maybe even to a larger hospital in Cebu before having heart surgery in Dumaguete. Hopefully this new Heart Institute has all of the necessary equipment (I would assume they do). I was not impressed by Silliman ER a few years back when I asked them where their defibrillator was and they didn't know......

Interesting, I had a quadruple by-pass back in 2006 in Vegas. I have a cardiologist here, Dr. Magbanua. I asked him about the new heart center a few months ago to see if they would be able to do angio's and insert stints if necessary. At the time, he said no because in order to be able to do that you must have the facility and doctors qualified to do emergency heart surgery and that they did not have them. Guess I better go re-check with him. Heart surgery today is like having your tonsils removed in the 60's.

I can't even get a foot doctor here as both Holy Child and Silliman both said they didn't have one and to try Cebu. But they are going to manage an heart surgeon? I'm also wondering what they mean when they say *open* heart surgeon... is that like Provincials *open* meaning in the hallway surrounded by sick and dying people?

Not sure what type of foot care you are needing, but, if you are needing surgery you might go see Dr. Oligario at Silliman. He is an orthopedic doctor. If you are needing foot "care" as in an ingrown toenail, etc...I am not to sure who would do that there, maybe a general practitioner?

I've been to Silliman and Holy Child last time I tried was less then 2 months ago and both told me they currently had no orthopedic doctors / foot doctors on staff. My issue was plantar fasciitis (arch issues). I was told to try a general MD or look in Cebu. I was seriously shocked.

I am surprised he is gone. You might ask for him by name: Danilo Olegario. His wife used to own/run the PT department at Silliman, also.

Both the new 'hospitals' (I think they are hospitals) at Daro and Sibulan 'look' well on the way to completion (externally, at least) and we all have to hope they will bring an influx of new specialist doctors to the region. So anyone currently ill just need to hold on a bit.

P.S. I don't really mean that as anyone ill needs to get checked asap.

Otherwise known as flat feet. More accurately collapsed arches. A podiatrist might be useful here. Orthotic inserts and all that. Bet the pain is more in the knees and shins? Perhaps the hips?

Still, finding a Podiatrist here would be like finding Rocking Horse Poo on the boulevard. I can foresee a trip to Singapore through my ball of crystal...
