Apparently the service at Y-Not has gone downhill. For specific tales of woe on this and other Duma restaurants Google thorntree Y-not update or similar. I have not been there in awhile. The service was never really great, imo. Supposedly owned by a Swiss National (how can that be?).

For fun, I started a poll, tell us what you think?

It is owned by a Swiss National. How that can be ? Strange question. You call yourself a RPlongtymer, which I don't really believe. Or else the Y-not Restaurant is only one you know in Duma. Because Y-not has probably one of the best waiters in town. That doesn't mean it's high class compared with western standards. But I know for sure at the Y-not a waitress doesn't' just get a full time job easily. They have to work as a trainee for a considerable time before they get fully employed. Me and a lot of people like the place. The staff is very polite and helpful. But over the years we have noticed that some low class expats treat them like underdogs. So in other words: THE WAY YOUR TREAT OTHERS IS HOW OTHERS WILL TREAT YOU.

No it isn't. It is owned by a Swiss national's wife.
I like the place but I would hardly consider the service "good" by any standard (even Dumaguete service standards). Sitting outside the wait staff has always been slow and inattentive. There are, of course, places that are much worse than Why Not, but there are many that are much better. The "disco" is a bit different for me. They know me and my pace of alcohol consumption very well and have learned that eye contact plus raised eyebrows means "I'm ready for another drink, please" and that when I walk in the place I would like my name placed on the billiards challenge list....but that took over a year of training and needs to be repeated when new staff comes in.

I consider Y-not an okay restaurant, food over the middle quality for the Philippines, at least for the dishes I like. I find the service good there, never had any reason to complain. I notice over the last year or so, more customers what you call low -class expats are increasing in number, same in Dumaguete in general IMHO. I'm not high society, but feel better when people have a nice behavior, by that I mean show respect to surroundings, staff and other customers, not all know how to behave in public space. That said, I still thought it's the few who have bad style

    .

I agree, the service has never been good, imo. If you check the comment on the thorntree board, I also agree the waitresses leave a lot to be desired. They rarely, if ever, come by after serving the food, to ask if everything is ok, like they always do in high class restaurants. They are slow to come around to take your order and you frequently have to go looking for them, if you don't want to wait a long time. They have a habit of not telling you of price increases or giving you an item that is similar but at a much higher price, example: pineapple juice ordered at 40php and delivered at 120php (for fresh squeezed, which they never mention). I don't go into the disco, too smokey (I don't believe their "non-smoking" claims, it is definitely smokey in there and makes most non-smokers sick the next day.
Terribly loud music, a regular trick by bars and discos to induce stress and make you order more alcohol, since you cannot hear yourself think while your ears are getting nuked by the high amp speakers. Great if your a smoker and drinker but not so good for others and hazardous to your health for all. It's not a high class place, never has been, nor has it ever been a place to attract upper class, educated professional type foreigners. In the many years I have been living in Dumaguete, the crowd frequenting this place has never impressed me a being particularly educated, upper class, etc, but just the regular run of the mill foreigner here, including an assortment of drunks, who are sometimes fun to talk to, but not necessarily "friend" material. I know one foreigner who has gotten food poisoning there, and refuses to eat there, going to sans rival instead, next door, but I never have. Their portions are ample, but their prices reflect that. They cannot handle large crowds and, in those cases the usual 20 minute wait turns into 30-40 minutes. Their menu is good, the food is usually good, but the service is lacking, including the waitstaff. I will say their CR is usually well maintained, but their "net cafe" computers rarely work other than at a crawl, which makes them generally unusable-I think they have a throttle on their connection. Always check the speed before ordering at the net cafe. Also, always check the wifi, it frequently is not working.

Sorry, I guess I messed up the poll thing as it did not come out right, didn't quite understand the setup for that, maybe you can fix it? HA! working now, did you fix it?

They did ban smoking in the main area. The karaoke room in the back or outside was the designated smoking area. Not sure what it is like now. Smoke free bars are a rather new thing as well. I guess you never went to any bars/clubs when you were younger? (I'm 35 and I can remember when going to a bar meant you were going to be dealing with smoke.)

If you are sensitive or stressed out by bad music it is best to avoid any night clubs in the Philippines, or pretty much anywhere in the world. I don't think it is a "tactic" to get anyone to drink more, it's just how clubs are. Also, Why Not is also nothing compared to other clubs in the area.

I go there for the air conditioned billiards tables. They were three of the best tables in the area for a long time. When I left over a year ago I was looking for another place to play...mainly due to the increase in imbecile foreigners that would come in there and want to play by their silly off-the-wall home country redneck bar rules instead of the well established international league rules that are posted on the wall and make a scene whenever people took a ball in hand after a foul. The tables and house sticks were also getting warped and damaged, which was also mainly due to imbeciles abusing them.

I don't think they claim to be a "high class" or posh restaurant. The service they provide is pretty standard for the Philippines, that's just something you have to get used to in the Philippines. Their food is above par with above average portion size. IMO, you get your money's worth at Why Not. I don't think they should be ragged on for what they are providing.

teh wynot has never had great service, and the food has gone downhill over the years (and the prices up), but overall in the broad sceme of things it is still acceptable. I don;t go into the disco any more due to the policy of having to buy two beers at once, and they are never cold. I woud not mind having to buy two beers, IF they were good and cold.
