Is there anywhere local to purchase some form of water purification tablets - I note that in the recent polluted water problem in Sibulan the local authorities distributed HYDROSOL.

I think it would be useful to have a supply handy in case of being unable to purchase purified water - as in a natural disaster situation.

Thanks. I really wanted a local supplier so I can purchase small amounts as each lot expires. I note that these packs (629 pesos) contain 100 x 67mg tablet and each tablet treats 5 gallons (about 23 litres) of water. The best expiry date I could find was February 2020. Still worth buying if nothing sold locally but perhaps 10 to 20 tablets would be sufficient. Maybe something for all of us to keep handy.

Do you think local suppliers will throw out expired tablets?

I think it's good enough just to stock more water. The worst natural disaster here put me out of water for only a week (though I inherited more thirsty mouths because I took in people who got flooded). Stocking twice what you normally order and then rotating that out would probably be good enough.

Tablets probably make more sense for people who are hiking? Wouldn't boiling water be good enough if you are at home?

Your experience would be dangerous for everyone to base their future safety on as others may find it is a more long-term problem; I think the problem in Sibulan has been going on for more than 3 weeks but a serious earthquake/typhoon could knock out purified water supplies for months.

Although it may not happen, what if your stored water bottles were hit by falling masonry and split?

As for boiling the water - that is quite a time consuming issue and depends on an adequate supply of fuel, which may be difficult to obtain longer-term.

In my opinion, a few purification tablets are, at the very least, a useful backup.

Also we need to think about where are, and we both know we are in the Philippines.

Water purification could work as a back-up, but I wouldn't want to rely on that. On the other hand, when my water went out due to flooding, all the water stations in the city were cleared out.

I don't go through much drinking water, so a month supply would cost me under $10. If I were in a situation where my back-up water supply got taken out by my house falling apart and I could be looking at months with no clean water, then it would be time to start packing.

Not trying to argue for arguments sake. I have been without water here before, so this is an important issue. We live in an area where natural disasters can happen. It's also good to know what issues your local water supply might run into. For example, Judyville is a large compact development which runs its own water utility. Their well has gone out in the past and everyone in Judyville went without water.

Which brings up another possible issue, you can't get water at all (as opposed to getting water, but your supply is contaminated.) What would you do in that case? Maybe you have easy access to a well? Maybe you can go to the river? When Judyville lost their water, they made a service available to fill any jugs you had.

I suppose it's best to have multiple back-ups. Carry X weeks supply of drinking water. Stock purifying tablets. Store extra water containers. Know the source of your water supply. Know where you might get water as a back-up if the supply got cut off.
